Question:
Not loosing weight......
I would like to know, if there are any people out there that have ungone this WLS and NOT lost any weight? I asked a woman that works at the BTC, and she told me that she didnt know that answer, and when I get in to see the surgeon to ask that question. So I figured what better way to get the answer to ask it here. — [Anonymous] (posted on August 5, 1999)

I asked my surgeon the same question. He said that is is 95% successful,
and then I wanted to know why the other 5% do not lose. He said sometimes
you get people that won't follow directions, or have a mental problem and
won't let themselves follow the program, and make themselves not lose
weight. As far as I can see, the RNY is practically guaranteed if we do
what we are told.

I asked my surgeon the same question. He said that the success percentages
you read all the time depend on how "success" was defined. Most
of the time they consider the surgery a success if you lose 50% of your
excess weight. Most of the un-successful people also lost weight, just not
50% or more. For example, I need to lose about 130 pounds to get to my
"ideal" weight. If I only lose 60lb after surgery, I would be
one of the "failures", but if I lose 70lb, I would be in the
group of "successful" surgeries. So, there probably are
very-very few people who don't lose weight at all, just some that don't
lose enough. Good Luck! Lynn

I am aware of a person who did not loose weight, not someone I know
personally though. This person sabbotaged herself. She continues to eat
ice cream even though it causes dumping and she drinks soda with her meals
because she can eat more that way. She definitly has other underlying
issues! I think of my upcoming surgery as a tool to use. If I use it
properly I won't have to worry about not loosing!!

I have been in touch with alot of people that have had WLS(RNY) and all of
the persons that I have talked to have lost alot of weight and have so far
kept it off. I had the surgery 15 mo. ago and so far have lost 160#. I am
feeling great and have more energy than I can remember having since I was a
child. Try the chat line, maybe they can give you more insight. Good Luck
and God Bless!!
