Question:
How would a diet of night shift worker look?
I work night shift, 11p-7a. All of the sample diets I've seen are for the normal people who work days or evenings. I usually sleep from 11am-4pm. Some days, I'm able to sleep in until 9pm. Any ideas on what I may do for a daily diet? — [Anonymous] (posted on July 5, 1999)

If you're talking about post-op diet, I don't see any reason for it to be
any different. After all, we sleep while you're awake. We don't eat at
night. You would just eat your meals in the evening and night...

The same thing you do now ... if you eat breakfast for "supper"
then do that ... if you eat lunch for breakfast do that .. it doesn't
matter what "order" you eat your meals ... just so that you get
in all the important nutrients into your "day" whichever order
it falls into. The only thing different about your schedule is your day
starts at nite. :)

Your postop diet would not differ from anyone else in terms of the basic
guidelines. What would be different is the times of day at which you eat.
For example, just switch your meal times with the guidelines you've seen.
As long as you get in at least 3 meals per day you will be doing fine,
regardless of what time you eat them.

I know how you feel. I used to work the night shift and it really screws
you up. I love to sleep even now but after my surgery I made myself get on
a schedual in order to get all of my food and water in. It was hard at
first but it is getting easier. My best advice is to make sure you go to
bed and get up at the same time each day and make a list telling you what
time to drink and what time to eat. This takes the guess work out of
trying to remember if you got enough food and water for the day. It works
for me!!!
