Question:
I am 9 months post op
I am embarrassed about even asking this question , but here goes.. I am 9 mths post op and still have terrible gas. I have NEVER had gas as bad as since I had my surgery. I eat right, I have lost 90 lbs so far. I hate to say it but it is soo offensive smelling. I hate it. I dont over eat at all. I get my protein, fruit, veggies daily, but only good things. I know about beano all though I havent tried it. Does it help even when u arent eating? I just want to do something to stop this continuing problem. Any advice would sure be great Thanks — taterbug898 (posted on September 4, 2005)

I have trouble with gas at times as well. I have to look at the particular
foods I eat or drink. Carbonation of any kind will do it. Certain veggies
can cause gas. Give beano a try, I've not tried it...but it can't hurt. I
keep gas-x on hand. That works for me. I've also heard that extra walking
will help too. Good luck.

The order I'd look at things is milk, sugar and then raw veggies. Do you
do any of those on a regulra basis?

Hi Melinda, I checked out your profile and am curious about how you are
getting your protein. I know that I have to be careful about which protein
drink I use. For instance, any of the Atkins drinks cause me to have
horrible bloating and gas. Anything with malitol or any of the sugar
alcohols will do the same thing. As long as I stay away from those, I have
no problem. I'd suggest you check the ingredients of your protein
supplements (I'm assuming you are using them........but maybe not) and see
if they have anything in them that ends with "tol". If so, switch
to something else. Also, ANY white carbs such as rice or white flour will
cause the same reaction in me. Good luck on finding your answer, I know
how embarassing that can be.

Here is the PILL you need. I'm still Pre-Op but I can just imagine how I'll
be Post-Op since I'm bad now. But I heard of "DEVROM" on OH
somewhere and called them. The Parthenon Company sent me samples and now I
use them regularly. I still release gas but it's virtually smell free.

Melinda,
I also have gas since my operation eight months ago. My doctor recommended
Beano, but it made me sick. I guess it is jusst something we have to put
up with!

I suffer gas primarily after eating carbohydrates, and any sugar substitute
that ends in "ol". This happens even with complex carbohydrates,
although if I eat a little brown rice after I've eat chicken, for example,
sometimes I'm not effected. I try to limit any carb intake to the evening
when I'm home and only my immediate will join me in the methane fusion.
Every morning I chew a couple of Devrom, and take one or two Phazyme. I
always keep Gas-X in my purse, and always take two at a time. InnerMint is
also supposed to help the odiferous quality of the gas, but I haven't tried
it yet.
For me, it's not the odor--which ain't a rose garden--but, the bloating
that's so ghastly. (Or should I say, gastly?)
I would no more go near cereal, cooked or cold, for breakfast than I would
shoot myself in the foot.
I'm a HIGH protein girl from start to finish. Too much at stake to not get
in my 90-100gr/day. This has proven to really serve me well as my muscle
mass has actually considerably increased. None of the 120 lbs I've lost
has been muscle. Thank you protein.
I don't know if we ever grow out of thise, but I think through diet
management and the above-noted meds, we can spare ourselves the worst of
it.
Oh, yes. One last thought, I know several people take pills with various
cultures, and/or eat yoghurt with multiple cultures. I try to remember to
eat a couple of tablespoons of my Trader Joe's Mediterranean cream style
yoghurt. Probably most people wouldn't like it, but I love it's tart
tang.
Hope this helps.

I have tried inner mint and I can say I do not like it. Devrom is a much
better product. just my 2 cents.

I would suggest removing certain foods from your diet for several days to
see what it is that is causing it. Do it one thing at a time, kind of like
when you introduce foods to a baby. Are you using splenda? Splenda is a
major contributor to gas around here, and I only used it in my coffee.
However, sometimes gas is just a fun side effect. My mother has suffered
with gas ever since her WLS in the '70's. She has been to many doctors and
diet changes and it just doesn't go away. :( But I think she is the
exception and not the rule, I'd try isolating foods to find if that is the
cause.

I too have this problem, Im 3 years post op and have had it since day one
of my surgery. It happens to me on average of 10-30 times a day and it is
the foulest smelling thing Ive ever smelt in my life. BeanO and GasX do
nothing for me. Some foods do aggravate it like eggs and milk. It still
happens even if I eat perfectly. Ive heard this is common, some get it some
dont. Ive learned to live with it as has my family. When they complain
about the smell, I say "would you rather have me FAT or STINKY"
and they all yell "FAT!!" But I know they dont mean it :)
