Question:
Iam 3yrs out the end of Aug. What should I be taking as far as vitamins, iron ?

Do any of you get dehydrated easily or have weak feelings especially in the morning? I have not been taking anything but I feel now that maybe I should get with a program. My age is 55. I would appreciate any answers. Thanks Eddie Carolyn    — ecp1950 (posted on August 1, 2005)

I am three years out also. I take chewable vitamins twice a day. I also take 2 chewable calcium, once in am and once in pm. I take B-12 once a day and I take 325 mg of iron per day. Not everyone needs iron. I have a blood work up done once a year to see how my absorbtion rate is. It check protein levels, vitamins, iron, etc. Wasn't there follow up care with your surgery? This is very important. Please check with your doctor about the follow-up. Good Luck and God Bless. 8-28-02 -125lbs.

I can send you a generic list of bases ro be covered, labs to have run, but I'd also suggest you join the Graduate list for people 1+ years out, as there is much discussion of post-op nutritional care. the link is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG

You should have been taking vitamins all along, but if you weren't, were your labs (hopefully you were getting labs done every 6 months, or AT LEAST every year) OK? I have a few links and documents on my website about this subject. I recommend you check them out. Vitamin B12 is priority #1. IMHO, iron should be only if your labs show a deficiency and your doctor prescribes it. Go to my website and check out the vitamin info: http://www.geocities.com/tiger_angie Angie

I am a nurse and I can tell you your B vitamins are extremely important, B6, B12 etc. As well as Calcium and Iron, you can generally get a good multivitam and it will take care of most of your supplement problems, but what I would reccommend is having your doctor do some blood work showing where your defitiancies are, and if you would need something more concentrated than a Multi-Vitamin.

I was told by my surgeon that I will be taking a multi-vitamin for the rest of my life! At the moment I take a pre-natal because my insurance will pay for them, 2 500 mg calcium, 2 B complex (I am unusual in that I can take the pill and my levels are fantastic...most need either sublingual or the shots)...these are the bare minimum according to my PCP and my surgeon. On my own, I have added in another vitamin (chewable), zinc, magnesium and vit D. Get your labs done...someone else replied that they had a list of labs on their website, use it! Once your labs are done, you will be able to figure out what you should be using. Until the labs tho...multi-vit, calcium, and b12...at a minimum. Carmen
