Question:
I am really concerned over how much my tolerance has suddenly seemed to increase.
I have gotten use to the day to day flucuations of hunger and amounts but I am now eating normal small portions all the time and not feeling full. I can eat a whole sandwich, or small chicken ceasar salad or whole hotdog. Maybe I am just nervous because for two years one half sandwich stuffed me.I do not want to even mention the amount of bad carbs I can tolerate. Are these protions 'normal' for this far out? or could I have stretched really bad? I had a transected RNY 11/02. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all on this site for making my WLS journey a positive one! THANK YOU! 300/150/140 — cathy G. (posted on March 3, 2005)

Are you drinking with your meals?

What from I hear and see - you are probably normal. It gets easier to eat
more the further out we are from surgery. The full or satisfied feeling
gets milder and we can eat sooner again. What I'm told is, this is a great
jumpstart and that during the first year or two, we develope good habits
and stick with them. I just had my 18 month visit with my surgeon. he said
the surgery did what it was supposed to for me, anything else from now on
is up to me. I fyou really think there is something wrong, though, make an
appointment and have it checked out.
Good luck to you,
Jo

Sounds pretty normal to me that far out. Even though you know how much you
"can" eat, it's up to your willpower to stop you from eating more
than you should. Good Luck!

I'm almost 2 years post wls and I've experienced this as well. However,
what I've noticed, is that it fluctuates. Sometimes, I can eat a whole
sandwich and then there are other times I can only eat part of it. I also
go through periods where I can eat and eat and eat. Some days, I feel like
I'm eating every hour or so. I just try to make really good choices when I
am feeling this need. I've learned to really listen to my body and give it
what it needs. I've lately found rice cakes! yes, I know they are carbs
but they are so satisfying and only 50 calories. I get the big ones
because I eat way too many of those small snack ones and I get the caramel
corn. They don't have many sugar grams at all and they are delicious,
crunchy, and give me something to eat that isn't too filling but will
satisfy cravings. I, too, can eat way too many carbs and some days,
especially right before my period, I let myself have carbs. Then, once my
period begins, I don't generally want them anymore. I've maintained my
5'7", size 6, 139lb. body this way since May 2004 and I've had no
problems with gaining.

Cathy: This all sounds pretty normal to me, too. Like the others, I have
days where I can eat what seems to be a huge amount of food, and others
when I can barely eat a few bites. I think it all evens out. At this
point (18 months out), I don't worry a whole lot about what I'm eating,
other than making sure I get in adequate protein. I weigh myself every
day, and if I gain a couple of pounds, I make immediate adjustments by
increasing protein, lowering sugary carbs, increasing liquid. Thus far, it
has worked and the 2 or 3 pounds come back off in a week or so. Weighing
every day has become my main tool for maintaining. It just keeps me
"conscious" of where I am and reminds of the number that I don't
want to "go above."
