Question:
Two years post-op RNY, food is starting to get stuck again.

I am two years post-op RNY, and for the past couple of days, I have gotten food "stuck" again after eating. (Like when we were new post-ops and if we didn't chew our food up well or took too big of a bite - remember that feeling? We had that feeling in our chest of the food being "stuck.") It has mainly happened on foods that were somewhat bready (I had one piece of pizza, and it felt "stuck.") but I also ate two eggs the other morning for breakfast, and they got "stuck." Since I'm two years out, I woudn't think that it is a stricture. Anyone else?    — raye (posted on December 15, 2004)

Hi, yes, it definately could be a stricture. I had 5 after 2 years post op. If it does not get better check with your surgeon or gastro person. It can happen, and it is easily remedied. Take care and feel free to email me if you have any questions. LOL

I am 17 months PO, yesterday went out to eat. Been to this place before - and had no problem. Last night, came home and had "that feeling". Haven't had it in a long time, had to go to the bathroom to "relieve the pressure". I was very surprised! I also don't think that it's a stricture...I think that I have gotten to comfortable with being able to eat anything, and this just reminded me that I still need to take small bites and to chew, chew, chew!! Good luck! Danette

I am 2 1/2 years post op and have been getting things stuck, etc. Had a scope done and there were sutures sticking into my stoma. Those were trimmed, and I was dialated at the same time. I have been so much better since (it took a couple of days for it to feel better). Being scoped is not too much of a big deal (my 6th - not all WLS related). It is worth the relief, or at least an answer.

I am just over two years out and still get that feeling at times. I agree with the previous poster I think we get used to eating everything and forget to chew or gobble the food to fast...then the pain and pressure comes. Since it goes away and does not happen regularly for me I do not think it is a stricture. It would seem to me if it were a stricture it would happen more frequently. It surprises me that I still have to vomit from time to time if I eat too fast or forget to chew (you would think I would learn after 2years out). If it happens rarely I do not think we have to worry. Best of luck to you in your continued journey. 11/02 rny
