Question:
As post-ops, are we considered a high priority group for the flu vaccine?
Are we more susceptible to the flu due to our surgery? I wouldn't want to have the shot if someone else needed it more but I don't want to put my health at serious risk by not getting it if I should. — Janet W. (posted on October 21, 2004)

Yes. Usually our labs are a good indicator that we are higher risk.
However, I would not bump my 87 y/o father out of line for me. My numbers
are better than his

Since my surgery 18 months ago, I haven't had a cold or illness. I would
say it depends on your health. I've never felt better in my entire life.
I've only had the shot once before.

yes, we are because our immune system is comprimised but when i see frail
little old eighty and ninety year old people sitting in wheelchairs in
lines to get the shot and none availablwe, i would not take it unless there
is plenty of vaccine which we know there isn't. i think it would be very
selfess.

I just met my PCP and he said I did not qualify for a flu shot. I'm 11
months out, down 201 and still weigh just over 400 pounds. I just figure I
will wash my hands a lot more and be a real stickler whenever someone comes
into work sick.
Not much more I can do. G'luck.
