Question:
Any good recipes for the pureed food stage?
My fiance had the surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago and is just now starting the pureed stage. He is going crazy with what he is eating. I am trying to think of things i could puree but nothing sounds good. Any ideas?? — Kathlynn D. (posted on October 6, 2004)

The person below... to much food. You should not be eating 1/2 cup of
food. 1/2 cup of food is the max a bypass person should be eating at one
meal after the person has been post-op for well over 6 to 8 months.
Stay away from CARBS! Potato, Sweet Potato. PROTEIN! PROTEIN! PROTEIN! is
what you should be eating only. That meal below has no protein at all.
Your first concern is protein. Make sure you continue to protein drinks.
You may not like them but this is what you need to heal and maximize you
protein intake.
At 10 days out you should only have 1 to 2 ozs of food per meal, 3 meals
and 2 snacks a day. Buy yourself a food processer or food chopper. At this
stage don't worry about it sounding good or tasting good. You need to get
your proteins in. I would recommand talking to a dietitian and join a
support group. GNC has a protein drink (Grape, orange, etc call ISOPURE.
The bottle has a total of 40 grams of protein. Great to have between
meals.
Place any fish in the chopper and it will make it into a soft or paste
food. MAKE SURE YOU USING POWdER MILK with all your meals. You need the
extra protein. Healthy Valley makes a great no salt added soups. Make the
soup and add powder milk. Campbell has Healthy Receipe Soups but watch the
salt contents. There is Devils Ham Spread in a can he can have (not to
much). Eggs scrambled. Baby Food. Puddings with powder milk added. Only
introduce one food at a time. Continue to stick with protein drinks as you
main protein intake. Again, stay away from carbs! Do not drink with a
straw (BIG NO.. NO.)
At this stage what you are trying to do is heal. Protein is the your main
concern. Also have him keep this in mind. We are only eating to live, not
living to eat. We have to change our mindset when it comes to food. Make
sure he eats on little plates, eats with small forks (cocktail fork, small
dessert spoon), eating at the table, placing his fork down with every bite.
Should not eat any longer than 20 mins.(Any longer and he is grazing, and
will eat more then he should). If he is not finished by then stop eating.
Do not drink 1/2 hour before meals, during meals and at least 1 hour after.
I'm 18 months post-op, have lost 191 lbs (currently 138 lbs). Most of my
foods that I eat are liquids. The reason being is I can't stand waiting 1
hour to drink water after a meal. I find that drink soups, protein drinks
I not dieing to drink something after I eat and I don't have to wait a full
hour before I can start drinking again. I wait 1/2 hour.
At the liquid stage - soft food stage you should be developing good eating
habits. Remember, this surgery is a DIET TOOL. Yes Diet Tool. If you
misuse the tool it will break. Good Luck and much success.

follow your doctors orders but mine says the following. there are 2 ways to
puree. in a blender, or cut into no bigger than pencil eraser sized bits
and chew to death. I did the pencil eraser sized bit ate off a saucer and
had nice rare porterhouse steak at a month out.

Dear Kathlynn,
I think the last poster made alot of sense, and obviously she has been very
successful. However, everyone's body responds differently to the surgery
and what they can and cannot eat. At my pre-op nutrition class, they said
that we were allowed hot cereal and mashed potatoes at 3 weeks. I tried it
and got sick. You do want to focus on protein if you can, instead of carbs.
But I found that it can get old fast, if you do not like what you are
eating. True, the main concern is nutrition, but it won't work if it
becomes a drudgery. Here's what I did at 3 weeks: I made a turkey meatloaf,
and I added all my favorite things to the blender: olives, roasted bell
pepper, soft cheese, soft cooked squash, garlic, onion, celery, eggs, and a
packet of Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing mix. I pureed all that untill
it was mush, mixed it with the ground turkey, and baked it at 350 for about
an hour. Then I cut it into tiny squares, put it in the blender with cooked
spinach and cottage cheese, and I would have a tasty pureed meal. True, not
everybody can eat these things at 3 weeks out, but if what you're doing is
not working, experiment a little, but within reason. Here's another idea
that worked great for me: I made chicken soup. I threw in chicken pieces
and all my favorite veggies, and cooked everything untill it was soft. Then
I ladled it into the blender and pureed it. I had a wonderful creamy soup.
One more suggestion: try and have at least one high-protein shake each day.
I find them hard go get down but I added a few drops of sugar free vanilla
or coconut extract, ice, and maybe half a banana or some blueberries to it,
and then run it in the blender and it is really yummy and satisfying, and
hydrating, too. Well, happy eating and happy losing!!!

Hello. I know that when I was in the puree stage, I just stuck to soup. I
didn't want to blend chicken, or vegetables. Soup, soup, soup is what i ate
for two weeks.

Here is what I would have on a typical day when I was on the pureed diet:
Breakfast would be 1/2 cup instant plain oatmeal made with Lactaid milk .
Later on, 4 oz of Choice DM. Lunch - 2-3 oz of turkey puree.(Cooked turkey
breast in the crock pot, made gravy and pureed them together. Family had
sliced turkey and gravy.) 2 oz mashed potatos. Later on 4 oz of V-8 juice.
Supper might be a couple of ounces of beef roast puree (roast done in a
crock pot, made gravy and pureed together). Sometimes I would get cooked
chicken breast and puree that with Campbell's Soup at Hand Cream of Chicken
soup. I didn't care for pureed veges, so I drank a lot of V-8 juice. I
might also have 4 oz of Dannon lite and fit yogurt later on. My diet was
more focused on variety than on protein in the first weeks, and I used
sample menus for my diet classes to go by. I didn't even try protein
shakes until about 2 months out. My way of thinking was that it was my job
to eat properly those first weeks after surgery. I had plenty of energy and
felt great. Do tell him to take it easy - my DH got tired of the pureed
stuff and ate something he probably should not have, wound up with an ulcer
4 weeks after surgery. (Healed up fast after he was scoped and had
"debris" removed from the anastamosis and the bleeding stopped.)

Good Luck to you!!! I made a meat loaf for my family and pureed that with
the envolope gravy that you can buy at any store.. then what I could not
eat I put in ice cube trays to freeze then put in ziplock freezer bags for
later use the meatloaf was very tasty.. just make sure that when you bake
the meatloaf put it on a cooling tray so that the fat can run off and that
you use ground chuck or imitation soy meat,, the imitation has alot more
protein...

I'm a little concerned about the ravioli, particularly at 5 days post-op.
My doctor and dietician are very firm about NO bread, pasta, or rise -
especially in the healing stages. I too am 5 days out (had lap RNY on
10/4) and am sticking to protein shakes, sugar free popsicles, some pureed
chicken, and egg salad (pureed of course) so far. I tried pureeing some
tuna this afternoon and it was gross! The best advise is to follow your
doctor and dietician's directions - always! Good Luck!!
