Question:
I am almost 10 months post op and I have gone below goal and need to stop losing.

What should I be eating differently or will I just stop losing automatically at some point. My goal weight was 125 and I am down to 118 and eating all the time to maintain. — canall (posted on September 29, 2004)

HI, It will slow down on it owns. I am 5'10 and down to 135. My 1 year ann. is tommorrow. the last 2 months i have lost maybe 2 pounds. But, I also up my eating to maintain. Bread, pot, pasta. Right now I have maintained well. Try eating more breads. But, that will be something that you might have to watch. They say once you stop losing that you will gain back 10-15 pounds. Good luck.

Eeeek, Lee Ann eats pot! LOL /hugs

Ok, all kidding aside, don't stress over it the loss will stop. I was concerned about losing too much as well. It did stop and then did a reverse gear and I gained 20lbs. Five or so of that was welcome, the rest was not. My nutritionist said to eat more, but to eat more of the healthy foods, not junk. I didn't listen and that is why I ended up gaining the unwanted extra. From my experience I would recommend to up the caloric intake with good food choices until you level off. Keep in mind though, you may level off for even a year before the extras start to creep back on. Best of luck, Rebecca.

I was reading a profile the other day and there was a lady that was talking about the same problem.. She said she had to maintain 2000 calories a day to keep her weight at goal. She bounces between 120 and 125. I'm not sure exactly how she did that.. but I will look for her profile again and get back to you.. GOOD LUCK Sincerely Sarita Wines

I agree with Rebecca; given time this will probably settle itself out. You may be entering a period where you get away with a lot now and still lose, or not gain. But eventually that ends. Try to go with the healthy foods to add calories, not the bad ones. It's no fun trying to detox off the bad stuff once your body no longer allows you to get away with it. ;-)
Meanwhile, congrats on reaching goal, and good luck with maintenance. It's a journey in itself.

Hi Carrie, I am going through the same thing right now. My surgeons goal for me was 185 because she expected me to have alot of excess skin. My personal goal was 175. I am at 170 and still losing. I have so much extra skin I was told that when I get it removed I will be at least 15lbs underweight. I have no excess body fat left according to 2 plastic surgeons and my PCP. My surgeon is no longer in practice. I am eating right but my daily activites are causing me to burn alot of calories. My PCP and I came up with a plan of action which seems to be working. In addition to sticking with a very good diet, I have added 1-2 protein drinks a day. This gives me "good" calories to burn (no junk food). You may want to keep a food diary for a week to see if you are taking in enough calories for the amount of excersize you get. Then ammend your diet accordingly. Best of luck - Maggie B.

I agree. Protein Drinks are the best way to go. You're getting the extra protein and cal that you body will have to work off. Don't start eating those bad foods just to gain weight.

The same thing happened to me. I lost down to 112, I'm 4'11". Then at my 2 year aniversay, I started gaining. No pleasant. The funny thing is I also started drinking protein shakes to curb my craving for chocolate milk. I'm lactose intolerant. I honestly feel that 1-2 of those a day combined with not be able to exercise due to a new job, caused me to gain 25 lbs that I'm struggling to lose now. I'm having a horrible time of it. The lbs are creeping on slowly, but I really want to lose at least 15 of them! I'm trying to go back to the good habits I had in the first 2 years...but I sort of took it for granted that I could eat things like crackers and chips and get away with it because during the first 2 years I could do that. Now, I'm cutting out crackers, protein drinks, fried foods, red meat, and bread. I'm back to exercising 2-3 times a week. We'll see how it works. Don't fret too much, you need to stick to good habits and see how your body settles. Stay in touch with a good nutritionist and keep your labs checked regularly. You may find that healthy for you is actually less than you thought. I know I felt better before I gained back any weight.

Just want to say thanks for asking this question. I seem to be losing below goal also. But from what I've read, I should just enjoy it while it last - in the meantime, take this time to learn to eat the proper foods - so I won't be freaking about gaining weight later. Thanks for sharing all.
