I heard there is a law in virginia that companies or insurance policies have to carry coverage for wls? is this true? is there a site or someone who knows about this? thank you — taterbug898 (posted on September 18, 2004)

I'm not certain, but pretty sure that the law in VA and a few other states
is that the INSURANCE companies have to offer WLS coverage -- but that the
companies that BUY the insurance don't have to pay the extra fees for it
for their employees. If the company doesn't include the coverage in their
particular plan, it doesn't matter what state you're in.

Diana is correct. Only self-funded companies do not have to offer this
coverage. VA law requires it to be offered to the Employer however the
employer doesn't have to buy it.

Yes, there is a law, but employers who are self-pay are exempt from it.
Find out from your HR department if they are self-pay. If they are,
confront and ask them to approve coverage for you.
