Question:
I am 2 years post op and just had blood work done. My LFT are elevted and I needed to
have more blood work done to rule out hep A,B,C. Is this a common occurance in RNY patients to have elevated results and what can be done to lower the results? Why does this happen? — Mary B. (posted on July 11, 2004)

Several things can cause elevated liver function tests. The big ones are
hepatitis and medicines. What meds are you on?
Do you work where you could be exposed to toxic chemicals? Do you take a
lot of Tylenol? Look at plain Tylenol AND combination products like
Vicodin, Lortab, Darvocet and cold meds.Look for
acetaminophen=Tylenol.Start looking at all the possibilities. Many of these
things can be changed or treated. Sometimes the tests will return to normal
and sometimes the goal is to keep them from going any higher. How do you
feel? Any loss of energy etc. Keep looking at your daily routine for a
cause. I don't think this is something that is common to RNY patients.

It is VERY common. HOW elevated is the issue? Still in double digits? If it
runs up into triple digits, it may not be related to your WLS at all. Many
of us have levels just a little higher than normal and for many of us, milk
thistle has cleaned up the liver and brought those numbers down to where it
doesn't make the docs twitch.
