Question:
major infection, not sure where to turn
Since surgery I have had a filling that fell out and have had to have a root canal. Along with that I have had a major infection that has now gone up into my cheeck area. The dentist has put me on penicillian (which didn't work), so now I'm clindamycin, which isn't working either. I have talked to my pcp, dentist, and have even called the surgeons office so see what I can do. I'm lost--has anyone else gone through this? — Betsy H. (posted on June 29, 2004)

Get thee to an infectious disease specialist. Not that you have an
infectious disease but they are the experts at treating ANY TYPE of
infection. Ask your PCP or Dentist for a referral. You don't want to have
an infection that close to your brain. Don't let that freak you out - I'm
sure you're fine. You just need to get it under control as soon as
possible. Best wishes to you!

I agree with the infectious disease doc. You may need to have IV
antibiotics, which can be done at home. Due to the malabsorbtion, you may
not be getting enough of the antibiotics you take orally. This is not a big
deal to do at home. A nurse comes out and teaches you everything and there
is always someone on call to help. Not saying this will happen, but it
might be a way to clear up the infecton for good. (Insurance usually covers
it).
