Question:
I received a call today from the surgery nurse stating my EKG came back abnormal.
Has anyone had this happen to them and what was the outcome. — balfour (posted on April 23, 2004)

My EKG came back saying that I had a "wave abnormality". Now I
am scheduled to have a cardiac stress test. I have had one about five
years ago and it turned out everything was ok, that itis just how my heart
is the doctor said then. I hope the one next week comes out ok. I also
hope yours if fine too!

I failed the first test. I had to have another test to make sure, I was
told that it was the machine at fault. I was cleared and on my way to
having my wls. Good luck, remember they have to make sure everything is ok
and cleared before you can go ahead. Best wishes to you.

Hi Debra,
I to had an abnormal EKG result but mine was due to a rare type of heart
murmmer that only effects women I would worry to much.

It's not all that uncommon for an EKG to come back "abnormal".
There are lots of reasons for it to get a little messed up, not the least
of which is simple misplacement of the sensors, which can be difficult on
us big people. I had two come back abnormal before a final one came back
OK. Of course, it depends on what they mean by abnormal. If there is a
possibility of something being wrong, I'm sure they'll inform you what to
do. Good luck!

My pre op EKG was abnormal. It suggested that I'd had a heart attack. My
surgeon got a cardiologist the see me that same day (or my WLS would have
been cancelled). The EKG at the cardiologist was also abnormal. They did
an echocardiogram, and that showed that I'd never had a heart attack; so I
was good to go. It scared the heck out of me, though!

I think the last poster was at my doctor's office! My story is the same as
hers. Two abnormal EKG's, suggested heart attach, then an echocardiogram.
Results, normal. Through all of this the most important thing to me was
that it didn't prevent my WLS. You might have thought I'd be concerned
that my heart wasn't just right, but no. When I asked the cardiologist if
an abnormal result on the echocardiogram would prevent me from having
surgery, he said probably not, but it might be delayed a bit. I had
surgery on 2/11/2004, right on schedule. And a side note, I am now
completely off of two our of four BP meds, and dosage of one of the other
two has been cut in half. I'm hoping some day I'll be off them altogether.
I feel GREAT!
