Question:
Watching what you eat
Since I had Lap RNY 4/2/03 everyone watches what I eat. Im thinking about becoming a closet eater. Yes I do snack quiet abit, but Im not gaining weight.Started at 262 now 146. Trying to keep my calories around 1200-1300 a day. At work I snack on fruit such as a banana after breakfast(which is 1 pack of instant oatmeal) Then at lunch Ill eat a sandwich of somesort with diet bread at 40 calories a slice 2% cheese on 50 calories and either ham, turkey or fat free bologna(very good by the way) but I do use real mayo, just not very much about 1 tsp= about 33 calories. Then around 3 pm Ill eat a small can of pineapple 50 cal. And everyone comments on how much I eat. Thats not very much especially if they looked at what they eat or what I use to eat. It really is getting embarassing. I wish people would not monitor what I eat. I do that enough myself. I read in a post something about a cottage cheese test for stretched pouch, what is this? — Carrie W. (posted on March 20, 2004)

I hate to tell you but people are going to monitor what you eat and as much
as I hate it too, it's mainly because you can eat more than you could at
the beginning and people are just nosy basically and are wondering probably
if you are eating too much -I would probably ask them if there was a
problem you could help them with as to why they are staring down your
throat. Just another thought you need to get rid of the instant oatmeal is
HIGHLY processed and the fiber has virtually been elimintaed so it
basically a good idea to eat the oatmeal but not the instant -take 4
minutes longer for it to cook get the old fashioned oats-stll has the fiber
and soluble fiber that is very beneficial for overall health. Or for more
fiber. Try the Flax and Wheat bran Hot Cereal They sell them at Gnc and
they come in cinnamon spice, butter pecan, and strawberries and cream-WAY
more fiber than oatmeal, 13 grams per 1/2 cup serving,12 grams of protein,
and 1 gram effective net carb-sweeten with splenda and cinnamon-DELICIOUS

I teased my husband out of this behavior with comments like "uh
oh..the food police is on patrol again. I'd better hide my stash!"
Or, you could just be upfront and say "I get uncomfortable when you
watch what I eat and make comments about it. I know you mean well and you
are just concerned for me, but please stop for my comfort."<br>
Good luck, big hugs.<br>

I know what you mean! My family did the same thing. I had to tell them that
I am a "big girl" now and can take care of myself you don't need
to monitor my food intake. I think they got the idea! I am 6 weeks out
and they don't do that any more. I have proved myself worthy I guess.
Good luck.

I think people are still learning about this surgery and the only thing
that sticks in their minds is how "small" the stomach is reduced
to. The fact is, you can eat 2 tsp. of food in the beginning, but that will
not be forever and people need to understand that.
You are just about a year and things do start to change - you can eat more
and you have to really make sure that you are in control of the types of
food you are eating because those calories can start adding up again. But
from a view of your day, you seem to be making great choices.
I think you should do the same as the previous poster and just let everyone
know that you are a big girl now and you have this under control :)

Carrie you eat the way I eat (even before I became obese) - small meals
every 2-3 hours. Some people eat this way & you will have to ignore the
people that watch what you eat. I sure they have misinformation. A lot of
healthy people eat often - it is really an individual digestive range. Just
tell them (if you must) eating 4-6 small meals a day is best for you,
otherwise you are going to have to learn to ignore the ignorant.

Start commenting on everything THEY eat. I mean EVERYTHING. They'll get
how annoying it is. Or even more fun, comment on each time they use the
restroom. "Oh, you have to go AGAIN? Must have been something you
ATE - let me refer to my LIST."

I know exactly what you mean. One day I was eating lunch at work, there was
a bunch of junk food in the lunch room on the table, big plate of cookies,
chips etc, left by others who wanted to share.... A girl walked in and said
"oh my god !!!are you eating all this!!!!????? ( I was not, not that
it was any of her d*mn business) then I din't know you could eat this
stuff! I just said I don't eat this stuff I brought my own lunch, a salad
and shrimp. And if I had a dime for every time someone has asked me if I
can eat real food. ... of course not at 18 months out i eat pretend food
comes to mind. but then I tell them I have been eating all regular food
since 6 weeks out of surgery.

I know exactly how you feel! before I had WLS I felt like every one was
looking at my plate to see what I was eating. now after surgery (I'm 1
year out and down 160 lbs) I still feel like every one is watching what I
eat? I have a tendence to snack so I try to snack healthy. I eat lots of
fruit and raw veggies even peanuts. good luck with the looky loooooos!
