Do you have any history with OA, WW, Tops or ANY organized weight reduction group that charted your progress? If you do sometimes insurance comps will accept these or at least accept it as 2 of the three. Otherwise all you can do, that I KNOW of is see a doctor and start a medically supervised diet. Good luck!

My advise is to go to any doctor or physician that you have been seeing for any health-related issues arounding any issue that affects your weight. Your GYN doctor, your Endocrinologist, your Family Practice Doctor...people who have been helping you with any health issues that could possibly effect your weight-loss and/or weight-gain. If at any point you have mentioned to them that you are stuggling with your weight and they have stated that your health issue could be weight-related or could be a possible hinderance in your weight-loss, and you have stated verbally to them that you have been trying to shed the weight and have not been able to, they should be able to provide a statement stating that you, as their patient, have put forth efforts to shed the weight and have not been able to do it successfully. And that you have had such and such health issues which have made weight-loss extremely difficult and nearly impossible. That should be beneficial to your insurance company. That is what I had to do with my insurance company because I did not have a program that I was involved in or registered with which could support me. So please try that. It worked for me and it might work for you. Good Luck!!

Not all people need to have a history of recorded diet history, but your medical records could possibly show the ranges of weight over the years. If you have no diet history, don't give up, it may be harder to get approval (i.e. possibly see a therapist that can help you get approval through insurance.) Basically the insurance companies NEED to know that paying for the surgery is in your best interest. There are alot of emotional changes involved with surgery, this is simply a tool and we really have to do all the work. This is just another obstacle along the path of your journey, learn from every step and take care of yourself during the process. It was about an 8 month process of research and waiting for me, and some days I still feel like I could have researched more.... I still do. This is a life changing procedure, educate yourself and get ready to show the insurance that you do know what you are doing. Go to nutrition classes and gather all your info. if you do have to appeal, show them what you have, the statistics.... As for me, I did diet history through Weight Watchers, Phen-Fen (in another state without MY Dr.'s approval.....Meridia....) And I bet I had at least 50 other 'diets' under my belt...(literally, each attempt added MORE under my belt..) But, most of my diets were not recorded, beacause of the embarrassment of seeing the Dr. and knowing that the speech was coming.... I just never went, hence really no record of drastic weight changes on record. I am sorry to be rambling, but without a history, you will need to make one for them and get ready, if you get denied, show them your cards, tell them your story and go in armed with you family Dr.'s approval and that of a therapist. Good luck!
