Has anyone been approved with Illinois medicaid
Has anyone been approved for WLS through the Illinois medicaid and if any were encountered what were the problems that may have occured. — anitataylor (posted on March 5, 2004)

Hi Anita,
I have IL Medicaid and had my surgery 12/12/03. I didnt' have any problems
getting approved. My bmi was 46. I didn't have to wait very long to get
the approval either. from october to november. just a few weeks.

Yes it is covered, but it must be medically necessary, and a psych consult
is required, they will not approve without one. The consult is not covered
under medicaid, therefore you must come up with the $$$ for it. That was
$541.

I had lap-rny, September 16, 2003 and the Psychological consultation was
covered, 100%. I had one with the first surgeon, when I was denied by Dr.
Alverdy and they paid for that, also. They approved me for the duodenal
switch and the lap-rny. I had absolutely no problems. It happened in a
timely fasion, too. Things are changing, though and if you want to have
this surgery done, you better hurry and find a surgeon, get approved and
ask Medicaid for an approval. Good Luck!
