Hi, Tanya: I only wore my binder while I was in the hospital, which was only for 2 days. It was very uncomfortable for me as it kept riding up and wouldn't stay put. I had Lap RNY, so I only had 6 tiny incisions, and it didn't affect my healing at all.
It may be more important to wear the binder if you have had open surgery to discourage hernias. Also, it did seem to help in the hospital while I was up walking as it kept my tummy from "jiggling", but as soon as I got back in bed I took it off.

This is just my experience, so you may want to give your surgeon a call just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps!

I wasn't given a binder and when I asked my surgeon for one he said he didn't use them for various reasons one being that yes, they do help support you but they slow healing according to him.

Tanya, I think the important thing here is what directions did your surgeon give you regarding the binder. Did he suggest you wear it or did he tell you you really needed to wear it. You really should follow his directions. Mary

All surgeons are different, mine has us wear them for about 2 months!

I believe for open surgery it is extremely important to wear it a minimum of 1 month. One of my nurses said she had the same surgery and she thought she felt good and took it off and ended up getting a hernia. It is your decision but for 2 more weeks it is worth not having another surgery. Good Luck!!

I wore mine off and on for the first 2 weeks - mostly when I was awake and moving around. When I was sitting or sleeping, I opened it up. No hernias anywhere near the incision and am 16 months postop now. Good luck!

I wore mine for about a month but then took it off because it was very irritating to a bad spot I had on my incision and it kept riding up. I now wish I had worn it longer. At 3 months out I already have a hernia that is symptomatic and I am back to wearing the binder so I can try to get a little further out without having surgery again.

You don't know how fortunate you are to have one. I had an Open RNY and never thought about getting one. (I had one YEARS ago for different reasons). Anyway, I think it would have made all the difference in my comfort level while healing. Oh well. It's to late for me. As far as it "chaffing" any wounds, I always wear anything like this OVER a tee shirt. (Works good for bras too. lol) As you can guess, I don't like chaffing of any kind. Maybe at 13 days post op the binder is'nt needed anylonger. But personally, if I had it to do over again I'd wear it for a month at least. But it all depends on what is comfortable to YOU. ;)

I wore my binder for 2 weeks and one day. I had surgery in July; plastic coating on binder was very hot (Texas summer, eek!). I was glad to stop wearing it. I've had no hernia and no problems.

I had open RNY on 10/21/03. I was in the hospital for 3 days and removed my binder the MINUTE I got home from the hospital. No hernias or any other problems! 295/247/150
