Question:
what dry cereal is ok to eat

I'm 31/2 post op and have lost 75 pounds so far, no problems eating just about everything and dont dump.Though I just found this neat site awhile back I havent seen anything posted about this yet.I would like to eat a bowl of cereal once and awhile but need to know the best one, if any to fit in with our wls program. Thanks, Shelley    — Shelley M. (posted on November 14, 2003)

Hi, I eat the Kashi brand cereals. There high in protien, and are pretty good. They have a few different varieties.

Hi Shelley ... my nutritionist said Cheerios is fine, probably along with other cereals, but to just watch the sugar count. She also recommended All-bran, but that tastes like cardboard to me! LAP RNY 06/18/03 -71

Cheerios. My doc, at 3 mo. recommended them and I'm enjoying them both in a bowl and as a snack out of a baggie, just dry.

Not Honey Nut Cheerios! Maybe if I keep saying that over and over again I will quit trying it. :P Grape nuts is just about the only cereal that I have tried that doesnt make me dump. But then I don't eat cereal all that often, and what I do have in my house is more geared toward my two young kids. I don't dump that often, and can eat quite a bit of sugar if I wanted, but for some reason Honey Nut Cheerios is a mean cereal. :-)

Look for ones that are lower in sugar, and you should be fine. Whole grain cereals (like Grape Nuts, Special K, corn flakes and Cheerios) are better than highly processed ones (like Cap'n Crunch). There are some low-carb cereals out there, in specialty stores (Trader Joe's, GNC, etc.) if you want to go that route. Just read the lables. Look for lower sugar and higher fiber, and get one that tastes good to you. You might have to try a few before you get one you like.

I found (at safeway) Soy-O's.... like honey nut cheerios, but made from soy and hardly any sugar. They have 11g of protein per cup, (which is not that much volumn after you chew chew chew. Good luck on your journey!! ~~Wendy D ~~Lap RNY 4/23/03 ~~313/192/150

The kashi brands, like Go Lean and Go Lean Crunch are the best as they have a good 8-10 grams of protein per serving in them.

cherios work great for me..Sweeten with a little splenda..Umm good....I only eat them once in while late in the day. If I eat carbs for breakfast I want to eat all day long even at 14 months post-op.

The ONLY cereal I will eat is Kashi - plain Kashi. I eat it like popcorn. In fact, I will take it in a Zip-loc to the movies and have it while my hubby has popcorn. Talk about a legal treat. And it is great if you are one to get constipated ;)

I found the Atkins Morning Start cereals. I love the Blueberry Bounty with Almonds. For a 2/3C serving (which is still to much for me) you get 10 carbs of which 6 are fiber and only 1g sugar. There is 13 g protein. I don't use regular milk, but the Keto Milk which has 2g carb of which 1g is sugar and 8g protein for 8 oz. I only make 4 oz at a time (its more than enough).

I like to mix 4 - 6 oz of nonfat fruit-flavored yogurt with 1/2 cup cereal (usually Special K). I stay full alot longer than when eating it with milk for breakfast. Or I'll have it at in the evening when my fiancee is eating his bowl if ice cream and I don't feel deprived anymore.

I do a blend of Special K and All Bran, with skim milk, and half a banana, for breakfast. I've been doing that since I was about 4 months post-op, til now (I'm almost 18 month post). I know it's carb-y, but it was the only combination that eliminated the constipation issue for me following surgery. Sometimes, if I don't want all that food, I will do what the previous poster suggested, mixing yogurt with some All-Bran cereal.

I was surprised nobody suggested oatmeal. I have to admit that I am awful about breakfast. I'm just not thinking about food, but when I'm on a plateau eating oatmeal for breakfast has always helped. Yes, I know it has 18 gr of carbs but pre-op I was probably eating at least 100 or so gr per meal. I only use skim milk for the little amount of 'real' milk I drink plain or use in oatmeal. I use soy milk for my protein drinks. I'm cold all the time so the hot oatmeal really helps warm me up. Good luck.
