Question:
The new atkins candy bar!!!
Hi all Im 8 months post-op -80lbs. Last night for the first time i tried the new atkins chocolate carmel chew, and it was delicious. My question is i see that is has 17g of carbs, but it says only count 2g of carbs because of the sugar alcohol and fiber takes up 15g of carbs. Is that accurate for a person that does not have high blood pressure, and not have diabetes? I wanted to eat another one but it was really sweet, and i didn't want to dump, so i only bought 1. Also has anyone tried the chocolae royale protein shake? Let me know how it taste to u. I always buy the vanilla and they are delicious. Thank u all in advance 260/180/160 — sexysag37 (posted on November 7, 2003)

Hi I do not eat the candy but drink the shakes everyday. I love the
chocolate royale, chocolate delight and the strawberry supreme, my fav is
the royale and the strawberry. I think they taste great as I have tried
many shakes and these are the only ones I like and will spend the money on.
I have never tried the vanilla but then again I don't much care for
vanilla anyway. For the other part of your question I can't really answer
it but it sounds like you are doing well.

I've tried the candy bar as well and I really enjoyed it. However, I'm
quite a ways behind you-I'm not quite 2 months out yet-and can therefore
only eat maybe a third of it at once. So I divide the entire amount of
carbs (including the sugar alcohols and fiber) by 3 and it's fine that way.
I believe you are supposed to count all the carbs, as the ones they list
only have an effect on diabetics or maybe it's vice versa. I hope someone
can help you more! But you've done great for 8 months post-op,
congratulations! By the way, I've tried the chocolate royale shake and
don't like it. I buy Le Carb chocolate milk, sweetened with Splenda, and
add the unflavored protein to it, and blend it with ice...it's awesome, no
protein flavor to it at all!

Hello, I have been following the Atkins plan and if you are following a
low carb high protein diet than the amount of carbs you count are the net
carb. If you are not following such a plan are probably eating a huge
amount of carbs. The net carbs are the carbs that affect sugar levels in
your blood. The other carbs are from the ingredients that do not affect
the blood sugar.

sugar alcohols do not act the same way in you blood stream as sugar.
However they do have plenty of calories. They don't make me
"dump" but they do give me stomach cramps, diahrea, and really
wretched gas. This is a common side effect of sugar alcohols, and really is
about as unpleasant as dumping and probably worse for the people around me
with the gas..

I meant to add, I find if I eat these things it fires up my desire for
other sweets, It may not have the sugar or carbs, but the sweet taste is
enough to get me going. I also find my calorie counts are way to high if I
eat them, and I fill up and don't get the right protein. since they have
little to no nutrition and I am eating for my health and to avoid
malnutrition I avoid them as much as possible. (and there is the gas
issue, did I mention that?! LOL)

I think Atkins products like the candy are nice for treats once in a while.
They satisfy the sweet tooth without doing the sugar damage! The net
carbs are what you count. I used to be an Atkins follower pre-surgery. If
you counted all the carbs on the label, and not net carbs, it wouldn't be a
low-carb diet! I called the Atkins center once about this, and was told
that in order to count the total carb content in foods other than Atkins,
deduct the fiber grams from the total carbohydrate. This will give you a
more realistic picture of your daily carbs. It worked for me pre-surgery,
so I can't see why it wouldn't work as well for a post-op. Also, I doubt
that you would dump on any of their products as they don't use sugar to
sweeten them. Most of them are made with Splenda, which is a great
sweetener. I have used it for a while now, and it tastes better than
aspartame, and doesn't increase cravings the way aspartame (NutraSweet).
Of course, as another poster said, sometimes Atkins products can contribute
to diarrhea and cramping. I've never had this happen myself, but have
heard of many who have.

I've used the Atkins products too and love the candy bars once in a while.
However, the shakes do make me dump. Not always, but sometimes. I think
it is the fat content (they do not cut fat in Atkins products). I like the
shakes but depends on the day whether they sit well or not. Lisa A

I have used these from time to time and agree that they taste great. For a
treat once in a while ... I don't see the harm ... better than the real
thing. However, I agree with Willow about the sugar alcohol issue. I can
handle a little bit, but if I eat very much at all I have terrible stomach
cramps, killer gas, and explosive diarhea (sp). Not worth it.

I wouldn't trust the 'net carbs' on those things, everytime I tried items
with sugar alchohols when on Low carb diets they always threw me out of
ketosis. (thus the sugar alchols acted like REAL FULL BLOWN CARBS to me)
Many low carb dieters (atkins, etc) don't trust them and experiece similar
results.
