Question:
What exactly is the window of opportunity
What exactly is the window of opportunity? I have seen the term used, but I'm really not sure what this means. My dr hasn't mentioned it to me. How long is it for most people? Thank you. — Lynne Z. (posted on November 1, 2003)

The infamous "window of opportunity" simply means you have about
18 months after surgery to lose all your excess weight. The first 6 months
or the "honeymoon" period is where you will lose the most. The
reason for this is your body is remarkably made to heal itself. Your
intestines will eventually begin to absorb more of the calories, fats,
etc... that you eat, but never all. Hope this helps!

It ranges a little differently for everyone, but as Lisa mentioned the
first half yr to a yr are generally the quickest months of weightloss. For
many only a few bites fill them as their pouches are still very small. Some
lucky souls aren't even hungry and have to remind themselves to eat(I
wasn't one of those). It gradually slows as your body "learns" to
reabsorb calories, also your new pouch will begin to stretch somewhat. I am
2.5 yrs out and really have to diet and exercise to get anymore moving, and
really just to maintain. At this point I can pretty much eat what an
average adult woman (who never had a weight problem) can eat...and
sometimes more. My window snapped shut about 8 months ago...so mine was
about 15 months long. There's probably better detailed explanations in the
library. Best wishes. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 282/140ish/125

I heard it's 18 months to 2 years. Well mine closed at 12 months. Ouch! ;)

My doctor stated that the honeymoon period is 6 months and the window of
opportunity is 18 months.
