Question:
I get light-headed and sick to my stomach....
I am currently following a diet that my nutritionist gave me (low calorie, no sweets). The problem I am having is that when I follow it exact 10 mins or so after I eat I get light-headed, dizzy and sick to my stomach. If I eat a bite of something sweet or salty it takes care of it. My blood work is normal, blood sugar level is always within normal. I have not lost any weight in 2.5 months and I am afriad Aetna is going to deny my surgery if I don't lose some weight in my 6 month physician supervised diet. Any ideas what is causing this and what I can do? Thanks! Tiff — Tiffany B. (posted on October 23, 2003)

It sounds like a blood sugar thing to me. Maybe not bad enough to be
recognized in blood work. Or it could be that your body is just going
through withdrawl from sugar as it would from a drug.
I get head aches when I don't have some thing sweet. My blood work is all
normal...yet to cure it all I have to do is have something with sugar in it
and I'm fine. Have you talked to your doctor about this?

Ask your doctor for a glucose tolerance test. Years ago I was told my blood
work was "normal", then after the GTT test, they found out I
wasn't imagining it, I was Hypo-glycemic.

What exactly IS the diet? If it's the usual food pyramid thing, low fat,
high carbs, that can certainly be what's making your blood sugar whack out
on you. We tend to have more success with the opposite. Normal fats, low
carbs, no sugars.

I had the same thing happen to me on a constant basis....Finally figured
out that my blood sugars were just crashing...My doc says throw a handful
of candy in my purse and when I feel it coming on, have a piece of candy.
It has worked since the first time....2 yrs 2 mos post op and down
#148....My weight only flexuates about 3-4 pounds depending on if it is my
time of the month....Sugar has NEVER hurt my weight loss....Try it. ONE
piece of candy candy can't hurt you....If you feel better keep it up...If
you feel worse you won't do it again....
