Question:
WHY DO SOME HAVE SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH DUMPING AND OTHER NONE

I HAVE SERIOUS ISSUES WITH DUMPING HOWEVER I AM READING THE MESSAGE BOARDS WHERE OTHERS SAY THAT THEY HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS WITH DUMPING, IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME THAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM?    — andrija (posted on October 14, 2003)

Everyone is just different. Why are some allergic to strawberries (like my son) and other not (like the rest of us? Everyone is just different. I personally don't dump, but as you mentioned, others have terrible trouble with dumping. I think is is just one of those things.

I think I can eat a fair amount of sugar before dumping. I haven't purposely tested it, but I have eaten very small pieces of birthday cake, cheesecake, and pie without any dumping symptoms. I have, however, dumped on diluted apple juice, macademia nuts, and avacados. I wish that I had a stronger dumping mechanism. It's too easy to go astray without the reinforcement of knowing I'll dump if I eat a fair amount of a dessert or candy. I did pretty well giving most of that up when I became diabetic, but now that my diabetes is gone, I could get sucked back into sweets. Don't despair--for many of us dumping is a desireable side effect.

I have no idea why some of us dump and others don't other than to say that it's individual differences. I do and I am so thankful for it - it makes staying away from sweets so much easier because I really don't like the symptoms of dumping.

I mildly (sometimes more severe than others) dump most every time I eat, no matter what it is unless it's just pure meat with no seasonings. Meat grosses me out so bad anyway I have a hard time eating it at all. I do eat a little carbs, but not a lot, and they are healthy carbs like fruit and veggies. I don't understand it unless it is the seasonings in the food. Also... what makes me dump today may not make me dump tomorrow. No rhyme or reason to it, it seems.

I looked at your profile and it doesn't state which surgery you had done. With BDP/DS you don't dump because you keep your pyloric valve but with RNY you may dump. Foods that are high in sugar and/or fat may cause you to dump. You need to learn how to manage YOUR new tool. Some things you may or may not be able to do. Good Luck!

I had RNY and rarely dump. I also try to stay away from anything which will make me dump. My doc explained dumping and why it happens but also explained that it is unclear why some people do not dump if they have had the same surgery as those who do dump. Most RNY patients dump. I can eat simple sugars (which my doc says has a lesser indication for dumping), but I can not eat complex sugar. Ice cream, even the low sugar/low fat kinds make me dump, yet I can drink milk or eat a piece of chocolate. High fat items make me dump, but I know of others who do not dump on those. At one point I even had a dumping problem with a protein drink, but I do not dump on all types of the protein shakes.

I have not really dumped in true fashion. I don't push the envelope either. However, I love that I can have that two or three bites of a special birthday cake or pie or that one homemade cookie. I don't go in for heavy fat laden foods, but I can enjoy my "I Can't Believe it's Not Butter" and regular salad dressings. I don't like breaded stuff or breads in general any longer. I barely eat any pasta, rice or potatoes. I enjoy the portion control this surgery has provided me with. I was never a snacker, and I won't start that now. I still very much enjoy food, but feel very much in control now. Really nice feeling to have it all. Open RNY 10/30/02 405/189/150

You're only a few weeks out, maybe that is why. I felt bad off of everything I ate at first also. As time went by I was able to tolerate things better. I still feel bad when I eat to fast (not the over full feeling - just feeling yucky) Try sticking to bland, soft foods at first and go slow. Hang in there!

I am a tad over a year and have dumped several times--- thankfully, sugar-rich foods make me feel awful. I have also dumped when drinking cranberry juice cocktail thinking that it was straight juice. For those of us more prone to dumping than others, there really is nothing wrong with our physiology. The receptors are just very sensitive to the presence of sugars and stimulate an overproduction of insulin (which causes all those terrible feelings). Sure I sometimes wish that I could have just a few bites of birthday cake-- but then I remember that I was never, I mean never, able to just have a few bites of sweets. And, I never want to return to those foods that prompted such bad addictive behavior.

I consider it a blessing that I dump VERY easily. Even some strange things (like corn) make me dump because of the natural sugar in it. I am so thankful that I have the gift. But in all of my post-op friends, I am surprised to see how few of them really dump to a strong extent.
