I had lap RNY 10/29/02 and had my first salad on 12/25/02. It was made with
young spring greens, some blue cheese, raspberries and a few nuts and a
raspberry viniagrette dressing. I was a little tentative, but it went just
ifne. I do still have a problem with iceberg lettuce - sits a little
"heavy", if you know what I means. Now I have salad just about
every day.

I was 5 weeks post-op and had soft things in the salad-lettuce, tomato,
mushroom, hard boiled egg, beans and cheese. At 8 weeks or so, added the
harder crunchy veggies like carrots and cucumber and broccoli.

I got lettuce back at 6 weeks post-op. Have to be careful with the salad
raw veggies for a little bit longer. I didn't get tomatoes back until I
was 9 weeks post-op. They asked me to wait on raw cauliflower and broccoli
until I was 3 months out. Be careful with the salad dressings too at that
time. The "Low Fat" stuff is mis-leading and can make you dump
if you're not careful because of sugar content.

I am at 5 mos post op today, lap RNY and I eat salads almost every day. I
began eating them at approx 4 weeks, I eat everything from lettuce to
tomatoes and cucumbers and radishes, even raw broccoli. Seems that the
easiest dressing to tolerate for me is the low fat ranch, Wendys makes an
awesome Spring Mix salad, I buy them regularly and make a steak to cut into
it for dinner several times a week. Every body is different as is every
Doctor, see what yours advises and go with that. I just go with what my
body tells me is o.k., usualy one bite and I know if I'm gonna tolerate it
or not. Congrats on your life changing decision and BEST OF LUCK in your
journeys!

I don't mean to discourage you by any means but I am 22 months post op and
I still can't eat salad. Something about the lettuce...YIKES!

Our surgeon allowed "plain" lettuce/tomato salads at 3 weeks. We
could add crunchy veggies to our salads at 6 weeks. It was absolutely the
best thing in the world, gave none of us any problems at all, and remains
our favorite food item. Every surgeon/nutritionist has different ideas,
however, and it's always in your best interest to follow your particular
surgeon's guidelines. Best wishes!

Sure you will. 13 months post op, and today I had a nice grilled trout
fillet and about 1/2 ofa dinner salad for lunch. Just give it time, you
will get there.

The very first food I craved was salad but I really wasn't supposed to try
it until 3 months out and my first few attempts were not comfortable. I
couldn't keep it down until 4 or 5 months post op. Your mileage will vary
of course, but now that I'm 7 months postop (almost 8), I don't even think
about it, and can eat all kinds of raw fruits and veggies. It takes time
but don't rush it and don't be discouraged if it doesn't go down well the
first few times. When you're ready (with your docs permission) chew well,
eat slowly and if it goes down "hard" give it another couple of
weeks. Eventually it should take.

My surgeon let me have "soft" salad veggies [like very
well-chewed iceberg lettuce] after about 6 weeks. He told me to leave
carrots, etc. alone for a few months].
