Question:
I am appalled at what I've seen today!
Has anyone seen on the AOL home page, the posting board? There they featured a few women who have had WLS and their before and after pics. There was also a posting board for people to post support or questions. In my life, I have never read such hateful, demeaning, hurtful, disgusting ignorant comments in my life. People can be so cruel, and it was directed at those who were brave enough to let AOL post their pictures. Again I am appalled, and just wondered if anyone else had seen it. I posted our website for those who wanted real support. — Happy I. (posted on August 17, 2003)

I saw that too and was equally shocked. I am unclear why so many people
feel compelled to make comments or judgments on something they know NOTHING
about. The demaning and obnoxious tone was unbelieveable! I guess since the
only web stuff I read qbout WLS is here I was truely shocked.

Is it possible for non-AOLers to read them? Can you provide a link? I'd
like to offer support too. When people wonder whether to tell, this is what
they may be in for! I am always amazed by how cruel some people can be. Of
course, as MO's we are all very familiar with that part of human nature.

The AOL boards are only seen by AOL users, I have seen even a few women
that are pretty rude in the yahoo groups too, and they have even had the
surgery....I don't understand people either. I hope they come here
instead!

I have AOL as well but can't seem to find what you are talking about. Can
you please provide a link for me? Thanks very much.

I'm sure if those people had to provide their full names and the town they
lived in instead of hiding behind their screennames they would hesitate
before posting mean comments. I will try to find this on AOL and post some
more supportive comments. I hope others will do the same.

I had AOL for many years so I am aware of the responses you get on the
boards. I used to read and once in awhile post to the boards but found
them to be as you stated. Yahoo groups are much better than AOL but
nothing can beat this place. I'm glad you posted this website so those who
really are looking for support will find it here.

Too many juveniles (I am not talking about age either) are on those post
sites. AOL is like their media giant Time-Warner, they like controversy and
shock - it's what sells. It is a shame that all of those posters are
afflicted with that terrible diease - ignorance.

The link didn't work for me either, so under the aol keyword I typed in
health and then I scrolled down and clicked on find out what other people
are talking about once the list came up in a box, I clicked on obesity
which contained Bariactric surgery subjects. Sounds like a lot to do, but
it got me where I wanted to go.

The reason you get ignorance like this, is because on AOL we are all
faceless, nameless and shameless. When you don't have to lay claim to any
of your statements, it is easy to say stupid, hurtful and hateful things.
Remember one thing when reading these postings, if you were to stand face
to face with any of them, they would cower like the cowards they are.
