Question:
Am I loosing Too Much Too Fast?
I have moved away from my GB dr. to a new city. And have a concern my new medical dr is also researching this. I had my surgery May 6, 2003 I weighed 240 lbs. My over weightness was 130 lbs. I am 5 Feet tall. I have lost 62lbs or 48% of my overweightness. At this Rate I will have lost 100% of my overweightness by December 31st. We do not feel this is normal or healthy. My Question: Has any one heard of similar stories. — itsme00313 (posted on August 13, 2003)

I am right behind you by one week. I had 141 lbs to lose to start with and
to date (three months today) I have lost 71.5 lbs (over 50% of my excess
weight). I think you are doing just fine, just keep up your protien and
keep in touch with your surgeon's office.

I had my surgery the exact same day as you and as of this morning have lost
54 lbs. I am just under 5'5" and my starting weight was 237. I feel
like I am doing just fine and my surgeon agrees. I understand your
concern, but sounds like you are doing great. Even though you moved away
from your surgeon, you should still be able to call him with any concerns
and maybe he can put your mind at ease.

LaShawn, one thing you are not taking into account. After about 4 to
5-month mark your weight loss will start slowing down and you will not lose
as fast. I was 239, 5' 1/2", I had mine 18 Sep 02 and have lost 83
lbs as of today. Just enjoy your new body and don't worry! You are doing
fine!

I am actually worried about this one myself....I too had surgery on
3/20(HEY LINDY!)and I have lost 93lbs. I started at 280 at 5'7" tall
and now weigh in at 187. My weight loss has not yet slowed down but
unfortunately, I'm sure it will. I was 130lbs overweight and I am only
35lbs from goal. I'm bad at math but I guess that would be about 75% of my
excess weight lost at 4 1/2 months. I am seeing a new surgeon on Friday
because I also moved to a new city so I know what you are going through.
If you care to e-mail me directly you are welcome and I will let you know
what he has to say after Friday. Good luck!

I had my surgery on Feb 3 2003, starting at 304. I have lost 113 lbs and my
doctor is not concerned that I am losing too fast.

48% in the early months isn't that unusual. I've lost 150 in a little over
6 months, but I did start higher than the other posters - 442. Depending
on what I look at for a goal weight - my choice or the isurance books I
have lost anywhere from 62% to 56%. If I kept up at this rate I would
reach the insurance goal in 1 year which would be amazing for a SMO. But
the chance of keeping up this quick weight loss is slim. I figure I am due
for a major plateau as I have not experienced one at all so far. If I can
lose another 92 lbs by my 1 yr anniversay that would be awesome as that
would be a lost of 242 lbs. If I don't get there I will take whatever. My
original goal was anywhere under 250 but since I'm 42 lbs away I guess I
need to set a new goal. I'm thinking 200 lbs is about as far as I will
likely go. I still want to have some fat on me and have some shape - not
just hanging skin. At 5'9 I should be able to carry off 200 lbs quite
nicely. Keep up the hard work!

I'm 5'3". I had WLS 4/16/03 which means I'm 4 months out. I've lost
70lbs and am only 30lbs away from my goal!!! I thanking my lucky stars and
hope and pray that I change my eating habits to where I find it easy to
keep off as well... I think you are doing great and would be very pleased
about my weight loss if I were you. I know many who are struggling. It is
much easier to increase your carbs to stop losing than to eat your protein
and get your water in as expected and exercise excessively to lose weight
to no avail.

I started out at 248 and I had lost 50 pounds in 8 weeks. The weight loss
DOES slow down considerably as you get closer to goal. However, it only
took me 10 months to make it and that was after I'd had plastic surgery.

You were 14 weeks on Tuesday, right? Our stats are a bit different. I had
surgery on 1/31, I am 5'7" and started out at 274, BUT, needed to lose
130 pounds as well. At 14 weeks I had lost 63 pounds (48.8%) and all
anyone ever said was that I was doing great. I am now at 28 weeks and am
down 102 pounds (79%) and have 27 pounds to go until I get to my
"ideal" weight...145. I am also healthier than ever. Like other
posters have said, keep in mind that your weight loss WILL continue to
slowly slow down as time goes by. Just keep up with your water, protien
and vitamins and you should be just fine. If you do really want to slow
things down though, you could try upping your carbs a bit and adding
another meal or two a day. But, you know, down the road when your weight
loss slows to 5-6, then 2-3 pounds a month rate, you might wish you hadn't?
You also might want to try finding a bariatric doctor in the area and do
your follow ups with them, rather than your 'primary' doctor. Try the
'find a doc' section on this site and maybe do some calling around. Good
luck!

That does seem fast to me. I was a "lightweight" (40 BMI on day
of surgery) and had 110 pounds to lose to reach my original goal. I got
there in just under nine months -- and had lost just under 50 pounds or so
at your stage (14 weeks out). As an aside, I was convinced I was a slow
loser in the beginning (how silly in retrospect, but that's what I believed
at the time). The loss does slow over time, but ... I overshot my goal by
twenty pounds (I'm 5'7", and wound up at about 125 instead of 147, my
original goal). I'm still trying to figure how to stabilize that, and I
eat 2000 calories a day now (I have for the last few months), but I
exercise more than I did as a pre-op (but still ... it's 3-4x a week for
maybe 45 minutes each time, nothing excessive). Ten of those last pounds
fell off after another recent surgery (not WLS-related); otherwise, I think
I would've stopped by now (14+ months out). My WLS labs are fine, always
have been. So, I'd watch your labs, be sure you're eating enough, and just
keep an eye on it. I don't think there's cause for panic, but it makes
sense to be concerned.

I also thought I might be losing too much too fast. 110 lbs. in 4 1/2
months but my Dr. says I'm doing fine I was 368 on DOS 3/27/03.
