Question:
Has anyone who had the WLS, just did not listen to the Dr and

still lost all the weight they wanted to lose. Of course, it isn't me , but sometimes i feel like just chillin out, and not do the routine, water,protein,etc..but i can't because i don't think i will lose at all. im post-op 4months, down 58lbs, but it is so slow, and i have learn to deal with it, but there are times when i don't want to eat, and i have to, and there are times when i just want to eat everything and i can't, because my body will reject anything that it doesn't like lol lol...just wondering    — sexysag37 (posted on July 14, 2003)

Rita, the water and the protein are more important for good health than for weight loss. Sure, if you want to lose the maximum amount possible it's best to follow the guidelines. But if you don't get enough protein, you will lose muscle mass and that means your heart could be affected as it is a muscle. And if you don't drink the fluids, then you are in danger of having serious kidney problems. My surgeon told me that the protein and the water were far more important for health reasons than for weight loss. I get my 64 (usually 90) ounces of fluids every day and I get 50-60 g of protein every day.

By not following the doctor's advice at this point, you are taking your life into your hands. You have had your intestines reworked and without following the vitamin/protein/water guidelines you will become malnourished and very sick. Please try to remember this is not about a magic number, it is about a permanent solution. Wanting to control our food isn't something that just disappears after the surgery - it will always want to control you - but you need to strike out for the promised land. How many other diets have you been on that you lost 60 pounds in 4 months? If you managed that incredible feat, did it stay off? Try not to measure your success by other people's numbers. Take care of yourself.

Well i do what I'm supposed to do but I know someone who did not. She ate sweets on a regular basis..drank soda ( not diet) everyday. She was constantly sick ( dumping) and became extremely underweight. She almost died. In the end they had to reverse what they could of her surgery and she is now once again morbidly obese and unhappy.

I have a friend who had Open RNY about 8 years ago. Her main focus was eat small amounts, period. She did lose over 150 pounds and went below her goal. To this day she still eats small amounts but its small amounts of ANYTHING she wants. Sodas (not diet), cookies, candy, pasta, breads, anything. She is now MO again even though her surgery is still intact, i.e no STL. Bottom line, you CAN out eat your tool. You HAVE to diet in some form for the rest of your life or you too will be where my friend is. Dont worry about how fast or slow you are losing, think about how to change your eating habits now so it will be much easier for yourself down the line. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 100+ and counting

I work with a woman who is about 2 years out. She is younger than me. Eats out lunch every day - fast food. I watched her eat 2 kinds of candy one day and dump. She wears about a size 2, but looks malnourished. She once told me it's all she can do to get 8 oz of water down during the day. I guess it's possible to do whatever you want, but there will always be a price to pay, even if it isn't gaining back the weight. I wonder what she will be like in 10 or 20 years. I plan to try to eat healthy and continue exercising and taking all my supplements the rest of my life. I may never be a size 6 (can wear a 12/14 now) but I just want to be healthy and energetic.

I am bad. I haven't been the poster girl for post WLS behavior at all, esp. in terms of water, exercise and vitamins...wish I could post anon. And consequently it has taken me forever (okay 1 yr 3 mos) to lose my 100lbs (with 10-15lbs. left to go) and I may have an ulcer or gallbladder problems. But overall I feel good, and my labs are A-Okay, for what it's worth....will I suffer bigtime traumas down the road? I pray not.
