Question:
How long does RNY-lap take?

My husband will be waiting alone as we are traveling out of town for the surgery. Who long will he be waiting? I don't want him to get to nervous.    — yellowflowers (posted on July 14, 2003)

My lap RNY took approximately 1 hour and another hour in recovery.

My LAP RNY was 3 hours from the time I was knocked out until I woke up in recovery. My hubby was allowed to stay with me until they wheeled me into the OR. The Dr spoke with him when she was done so he wouldn't worry. This is customary for most Dr's.

My lap RNY took 1 and 1/2 hours. To be honest, if your doc tells you it takes them more than 2 hours I would look for a more skilled laproscopic surgeon.

Hi! Mine took 2 1/2 hours because I had a TON of scar tissue that had to be removed before they could even start the actual sugery on my tummy. My husbands took 45 minutes. (We both had Lap RNY by the same surgeon). SO... everyone is different, but tell your hubby not to panic unless the actual surgery starts to take more than 3 hours. Now, be aware, you will be considered "in surgery" for a lot longer than the surgery actually takes, so be sure to talk to your doc about actual surgery time and the time you will be seperated from your hubby! :~)

I am 3 weeks post-op. I went in to the OR at 7:45 and the doc talked to my husband at 11:30. Everything went fine. I was awake in the operating room then they gave me some "Margaritas" and I was out. They ran an IV, Central line, and another IV that monitors your blood pressure through an artery. I am sure it takes a good 30 minutes to get all that going. Total time took around 4 hours. Depends on the surgeon I guess. OH YEAH, they fixed my hernia.

I think the best bet is to ask the surgeons office what is the "norm" that this particular surgeon has for his/her lap RNY patients. As you can see, times vary, depending on the surgeon and any issues/complications that may arise while in surgery.

I was on the table for 95 minutes; the surgeon came out to talk to my wife less than 2 hours after I had been wheeled into the OR. I started at 500 pounds with a BMI over 61.

My surgeon told me and has told many at our suport group that an uneventful lap RNY should last approximately 1 1/2 hours.
