Question:
Any post-op trumpet players out there?
I am a pre-op music teacher and professional trumpet player... any post-op brass players out there? My question: how long after lap RNY can you get back to playing regularly? — Tim W. (posted on June 22, 2003)

Boy tough question. I don't play trumpet, but have played the clarinet for
over 9 years. As soon as I was sent home I started playing. 1. Becuase it
helped me to relax and get away and 2. because I was told to use a
breathing device every 30 min. to avoid fluid in my lungs. So I used it and
my clarinet. I play just about everyday from anywhere to 30min-1 hour and
have never had a problem. I would ask your doctor though. Oh BTW I had LAP
RNY. Good luck!!

Brass player here! Professional Trombone and teach everything at the
elementary level. Knowing you have some serious back pressure and some
abdominal support going on, give it one/two weeks. Let your body determine
its time. Try not to go too high yet. Feel your body as you play and test
it with scales. Buzzing on the mouthpiece like crazy- won't be a problem
(you can do this when you get home). If you are open surgery... Take more
time before going high. If you have one of those Monet (sp.?) trumpets
bust out your lighter friends. Oh, sit down too! ;)
