Question:
Is the gastric bypass surgery and the rny surgery the same procedure

My doctor refers to the surgery i am to undergo as a complete gastric bypass. Is this procedure and the RNY the same thing?    — Christy H. (posted on June 1, 2003)

actually no, it's not. Any surgery that bipasses some of the bowel and messes with the gastric system - combined is considered a gastric bipass. It is most <i>commonly</i> referred to as an RNY, but this would also encompass the DS. It would not however, apply to the banded surgeries, since they don't typically bipass bowel.
