Question:
Anyone know?

Anyone know if meatloaf is something we can tolerate post-op once we're up to eating again?    — Jackie D. (posted on May 30, 2003)

Love it! I think it's an excellent choice too. Some people are more sensitive to high fat content foods. It would cause them to dump. I don't dump on high fat foods at all...sometimes I wish I did. So, you might have to be extra careful to use lean meat and drain off extra grease.

Hamburger is about the only red meat I can tolerate and when I was early post-op meatloaf and greenbeans was the meal I was thinking about having as soon as I was off that full liquid stage. Never have had a problem with meatloaf

1 month post op and I love meatloaf w/ketchup, the meatloaf I had was very moist, and I had about 2oz and no problems. For me usualy as soon as I put somethiing in my mouth if it doesnt tast right I spit it out, and if I chew and swollow a bit of food and my new pouch grumbles or GROWLES I dont eat it. Enjoy :0)

I can tolerate the little bit of meatloaf I have eaten. What I mean is, I start out all gung-ho and hungry for it but then a couple bites into it, it just doesn't sit right. Hasn't made me sick but makes my pouch grouchy. Same thing with anything with ground beef, except Wendy's chili. And I even use extra lean ground round when I cook at home, including meatloaf. Just think it's one of those things. Depends on the individual. I make meatloaf couple times a month too -- it's DH's favorite.

I can eat a few bites, but I can't handle the katchup on it anymore. I don't do well with hamburger anymore, so im going to try over this weekend and come up with a tuna loaf....can't hurt to try one:o) Good luck!

Boy, everyone is different and the time element is important. I couldn't 'stomach' meats, chicken, bread, pasta and rice early out. It was around 4 months out before I could 'dabble' in chicken and beef. (I still do not want breads and pasta/rice or potatoes.) I will tell you, for me, the meats can NOT be overcooked. If it is dry or tough, I cannot handle it. If you like fish, well, that is easier to 'process'. It chews up nicely and goes down smooooth. As far as dumping, I don't think I am a dumper. I don't push it and have not had really bad stuff. I have had like two or three bites of DH's dessert on occasions. Had to use a regular Instant Breakfast to mix with my protein powder once. It had 23 grams of sugar. I didn't dump, but sometimes I can suddenly feel a bit sleepy after a meal. Wears off fast. (Open RNY 10/30/02 down 152 lbs.)

Hi Jackie- If you see that you don't have any lactose intolerance problems post-op at the meatloaf eating stage, you might try adding a little milk into your raw mealoaf while mixing in the other ingredients. I have always made meatloaf this way because it keeps it very soft. Good Luck :o) Mea

Yes, we can have meatloaf. I love it with lots of ketchup or gravy. Also, keep in mind that it is a "safe" choice when eating out, like at Cracker Barrel. Just add some mashed potatoes and green beans! Yummy!!!
