Question:
Has anyone experienced bacterial overgrowth
Can anyone tell me if they have been told they have bacterial overgrowth in the unused stomach after RNY? Can this portion of stomach be removed or is medication effective? The person with this problem is 10 years post-op. — debi W. (posted on May 10, 2003)

I have had problems with bacterial overgrowth for years. I had the JIB WLS
in 1979. Most recently, I found pharmaceutical strength liquid colloidal
silver to be the best thing to control the bacteria. It can be found in
weaker strengths at the GNC stores, but I buy a stronger strength at Sam's
General Store online at www.samsstore.com. I tried all sorts of
antibiotics and they were losing their effectiveness. I had all sorts of
IBS-like symptoms as a result. Contact me if you wish to discuss further!

Good info for post-ops whose doctor did not test for this and treat it
before surgery. But for PRE-OPS, it can be detected prior to surgery and a
course of antibiotics prescribed to treat it. Thank goodness my doctor was
one of those who believes that it can eventually cause cancer in the
transected stomach if not treated before surgery so he tests and treats if
necessary.
