Question:
My insurance requires approval by Intracorp. What do I do?
My Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance goes through Inrtacorp for approval. The insurance lady at the surgeons office said that they can be very hard to deal with. Now I am afraid that I may not be approved. Any suggestions on what I need to do. My PCP has still not written me a letter to send them about medical necessity. Everything else is done. Can anyone tell me what might help my chances or if you have been approved by them? Thanks a lot! — sandyh (posted on April 29, 2003)

My insurance, CIgna, also goes thru them. The Dr/Hospital called them for
approval and got it for 3 days. The Dr kept me in for 6. No one called to
get additional aproval....They have authorized payment for the 3 days but
has denied it for the last 3. $28,000 hangs in the balance. I am now
impatiently waiting for someone, anyone, to provide them with the requested
information to explain the last 3 days. You are right to be concerned.
Follow thru on everyone and make sure they have done their jobs....Good
luck.Leslie Elwood

My insurance went through Intracorp, too. The info was sent to them on a
Monday and I was approved on that Wednesday. The only co-morbidity I had
was sleep apnea. And, the only medical documentation they had, to prove
necessity was a letter from my bariatric surgeon. Everything was fast and
went smoothly...so don't think the worst! It may just go through just as
quickly for you!!! Good luck!

I failed to mention in my previous post: Insurance paid for my 4 night
stay in the hospital. I had to pay my 10% portion, but I didn't have any
problems getting coverage for the entire stay and the
doctor/lab/anesthesiologist bills.

Make sure you even need a medical necessity letter from your PCP. Most
people mistakenly think he is the one to write it but unless your surgeon
requested for your pcp to do it, they (the surgeons) usually do it. My
surgeon has his own team and he sent me to the internist on it who cleared
me for surgery and ordered all the tests and wrote the letter of medical
necessity. my pcp was left completely out of the loop and i am not sure
even now that he knows that I have had this surgery.
