Question:
Does anyone feel out of control?
Help! I am two weeks pre-op and trying my hardest to not gain weight, but the harder I try, the more I want to eat. It's scaring me because when I came off the Atkins diet after two years (stopped losing and could not get any lower) weight came back with a vengence. I'm trying to go back to that pre-op because my doctor doesn't want me to gain anymore saying the risks are greater with a higher BMI. I started out with a BMI of 43 several months ago with my first appt with my surgeon, now at 47 BMI. I need help... anyone else go through this? — Happy I. (posted on April 27, 2003)

WELL, DURING THE MONTH AND A HALF BETWEEN MY APPROVAL AND MY SURGERY, I
GAINED ABOUT 15 POUNDS I THINK. I ATE WHATEVER I WANTED. I CAN ONLY GIVE
MY OPINION. DONT DEPRIVE YOURSELF. MY MOTHER GOT THE FLU THE WEEKEND
BEFORE HER SURGERY AND COULDNT EAT ANYTHING. AFTER ALL SHE WENT THROUGH
WITH THE SURGERY, THAT IS WHAT UPSETS HER THE MOST. SHE DIDNT GET HER
"LAST MEAL". AFTER SURGERY, THE WEIGHT HAS NO WHERE TO GO BUT
OFF. DONT WORRY ABOUT IT. YES IM SURE THE RISK GOES UP THE HEAVIER YOU
ARE, BUT REALLY HOW MUCH DIFFERENCE CAN 10 OR 20 POUNDS MAKE? IM NOT AN
EXPERT THOUGH. MY STARTING BMI WAS 50. I HAVE LOST 125 POUNDS. MY
MOTHERS BMI WAS LIKE 70 OR SOMETHING AND SHE DIDNT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS
ASSOCIATED WITH A HIGHER WEIGHT WITH HER SURGERY. THE MAJOR RISK COMES
FROM BLOOD CLOTS FROM WHAT MY SURGEON HAS SAID AND MOSTLY THAT IS
HEREDITARY AND ALSO FROM IMMOBILITY AFTER SURGERY. SO GET UP AND WALK WALK
WALK. HAVE FUN IN YOUR NEW LIFE COMMING SOON.

A lot of surgeons will cancel your date if you have gained weight so be
careful!!!!

I call it the, "Last Meal" syndrome. Pre-op I ate whatever I
wanted, because I knew I'd have to change my eating habits post-op. I'm not
saying that it was right, but it happened.
