Question:
I am 9 months post op, open RNY and have lost 145 pounds. I am on a plateau. What
is the best way to get off the plateau? I can't walk cos I got a stress fracture from walking 5 miles a day, so I bought an exercise bike last night. What can I do to get off the plateau? Any advice is appreciated. — Judy W. (posted on April 24, 2003)

Judy, check the library under "plateau". This question comes up
every few days and there is a ton of advice in the library. We all
experience them and there are varying ways to try to get off the plateau
that work for some, and for others, you just have to tough it out until it
passes. 145 in 9 months is extremely good.

i want to say congratlatins you are doing great great great im so so so
happy for you and you success so far. what i want to say about a plateau is
that 1 as you start reaching the point where your body is going in to
stored fat you are going to see that you are going to plateau alot no
matter how much you run how less you eat how much you work yourself to
death your body has got to beable to to refual from somewhere so you can
loose more weight thats why people get to a point where they plateau our
they may be 162 today and 165 tomorrow you body shifts its self it you
never plateau and never shifted weight a few pounds that would not be good
that would mean that you would only be loosing surface fat and not anything
else your body needs time to work. its ok just keep doing what you are
doing your are doing fine. the only time you should start to worry is if
you start picking up weight which in my case i did and you find yourself
able to eat lots like regular amounts of food and drink again in my case
that happened. so dont worry you got my hug fot the day keep up the good
work.

Judy...yes, there is some good information in the library, but if everyone
asked a question that wasn't asked before, we'd only have one or two new
questions a day *G*.
<p>
We're practically surgery twins as I had my surgery two days after you
(7/17/02). I've lost about 172 pounds since the surgery, but then again,
I started at 427 pounds too. And as has been observed, men lose faster too
*G*. You're doing great...you're down from 350 to 205 after 9 months.
How long have you been on the plateau? Try varying your exercise routine
- maybe pedal at a faster rate for a shorter time one day and at a lower
rate for a more sustained period another day. Vary your caloric intake
too - mix up your protein/carbs/fats ratio a day or two each week. Then
again, maybe your body is just catching its breath after an excellent 9
months. We're not going to lose that 15-20 pounds a month anymore. It's
going to be 5-10 pounds a month. As long as the scale eventually heads
downward instead of upward, you are in good shape! JR
