Question:
Will the surgeon do an RNY on a stomach with polyps?
I had my endocopy done on my stomach yesterday and the Dr found multiple polyps. She said they did not look suspicious but removed eight of them and had them biopsied. — Peggy M. (posted on April 5, 2003)

ABSOLUTELY! You can still have RNY surgery. I am living proof. Just call
me polyp queen! I had 6 benign polyps removed in April 2001 and 15 in
January 2003, 2 weeks before my surgery.

My surgeon wanted to make sure I didn't have any polyps that
needed removing before surgery - surprise! He removed them and all were
benign and I had my open RNY two weeks later with no problems. However, I
had to have a g-tube just to be safe in case they needed to get access to
my old stomach. He also put in clips in the stomach wall that in the
future can be found with a fluoroscope and then a needle inserted and the
opening enlarged with dialators and a scope inserted. That way I have
pretty easy access to the old stomach without having to undergo an open
procedure. I will need to have my old stomach scoped every 3-5 years along
with the other end (colon) cause I grow polyps there also.

At first my internist, who normally does all my scopings of any
kind, was worried about me having the RNY versus a banded procedure because
of the lack of access to the old stomach. When I explained what would be
done and how access could be done he was fine with it. He just wanted to
maintain access to the old stomach and not have to do a major surgical
procedure.

So if anyone trys to tell you it's a problem tell them no and to
do some more research. Putting the clips in everyone really makes a lot of
sense to me as no one knows when there could be problems. Just because
food isn't going to our old stomachs doesn't me they still can't have
problems. One of the doctor's my surgeon did some fairly recent training
with is now putting the clips in everyone. I think the only issue is, is
that then they need to suture the stomach to the abdominal wall so it
doesn't move all over when they are trying to get into it. If anyone gets
a g-tubs this will already be done anyway.

Good luck and I'm sure everything will go fine. Chris
