Question:
What was your last meal before surgery?

What was the last thing you wanted to eat before your surgery? It is just a silly question I am sure, but I spend some time trying to decide what my last real full meal will be..I know that eventually you will be able to eat just about anything you want to but in just very small amounts, but never to a full meal. Just curious...    — Toni W. (posted on March 30, 2003)

WHICH last meal? I was "last supper-ing it up" for a couple of weeks before surgery!LOL! My actual last meal was clear liquids (for the day before surgery.) By the time I was that close to surgery, there really was no particular food I thought I would REALLY miss. Steak would be the only thing I really thought I might miss, because I had heard so many people have problems with beef after surgery. I husband and I went out to dinner and split a combo dinner with steak, chicken and shrimp the night before I had to be on clear liquids. I thought it would probably be a long time before I could eat in a restaurant again. (Wrong!) I think this is a good question because sometimes things are not what you think they are going to be like, and you just have to see how things go after YOU have surgery! Best of luck!

I'm with Susan....I had SEVERAL last meals. I made sure to get in all my favorites a couple of weeks leading up to my surgery. I had to be on liquids a couple of days before my Surgery, but my Last Meal before that was PIZZA!!

I was just like some of the other posters and did the "last supper" thing for a couple weeks! LOL Ofocurse my surgeon warned against this, but I wanted to eat since I knew it would be atleast 3 months before I would try anything like that again. I had chicken francaise, caeser salad, lots of fresh homemade bread and cheesecake! I try to stay away from stuff like that now, but ofcourse will have a few bites once in a while. Goodluck to you and congrats on your upcoming surgery~

I knew that eventually I would be able to eat most of the things I really like so I didn't have a real hard time with the last supper thing. (Thankfully I never was much of a sweets eater). I knew that I would miss my diet Pepsi so I drank more than my share of pop in the last days but then I had to think of what I really wanted to eat that I would never eat after surgery, for me it was an Orginal Submarino sandwich from Fazoli's, I knew that my days of eating that much bread would be over for good. It was the best sandwich I ever had. I don't miss it at all now, I am 3 months out and have not had any bread at all and am just fine with my memory! (But I do miss the diet Pepsi!!!) Best of luck to you on your journey, God bless.

I also had a "last supper" every night for two weeks. I made a list of food that I really like, and went to restaurants in order to get it. The meal I had the night before surgery was a very good steak at a nice restaurant.

Like Susan and the others I went thru the "last supper" snydrome for several weeks before surgery and probably gained a good 6-10 additional pounds. If I hadn't done so, I'd be at goal by now. My last meal at a nice restaurant was their specialty prime rib, baked potato with tons of butter, several glasses of good wine and cheesecake, all of which I was never sure I could eat or drink again. I wish someone had told me pre-op that in all likelihood I would eventually be able to eat all of my old favorites again, just in much smaller quantities. If they had, then perhaps I wouldn't have gone wild and gained those last few pounds..

I stayed out of the last supper syndrome - in fact, I lost 13 pounds in the 2 1/2 months from my initial consult to my surgery. I felt that it was kinda stupid to intentionally put myself further away from my goal weight. My last meal before my 2-day bowel prep & clear liquid diet? Frankly, I don't remember. It wasn't anything special...JR

I had 2 wks of last meals, however, my LAST meal on Wednesday the 14th (the night before surgery) was YUMMY! I went to this cajun place, Acme, in NYC (I live in Manhattan) and had BBQ Shrimp & cornbread, mashies w/ skins, 2 regular cokes and mississipi mudpie with icecream. I will tell you I recently went there again (at 4 mos post op) and I had everything except the soda, mudpie and cokes. Good Luck. Heather Open RNY 8/15 305/201/150

I was a victim of the last supper syndrome too. I tried not to go crazy in the last few weeks before my surgery, but I did have my faves, lasagna, chinese, pizza, fast food burgers, but the night before surgery my husband and I went to a Bonanza Buffet restaurant and I had a teriyaki steak, stuffed potato, a range of salad bar stuff, white bread buns smothered in butter...drool...and a trip to two to the ice cream dessert bar...its all in the past now. LOL. Since my surgery I have tried most of these foods again, but have lost my taste for them. My favorite dinner choices now are chicken/beef/fish with potato and lots of veggies and salad. I have even indulged in steak neptune (steak with crab meat/asparagus and hollandaise sauce). Of course, my hubby is eating most of it, but I still can eat anything I want in moderation. Hugs, Kim S. Count me in with the crowd who had several "last suppers!" My real last supper though was Red Lobster...shrimp scampi...mmmm! Cheddar Bay biscuits (boy I miss those, can eat maybe 2 or 3 small bites of one at the end of a meal now)! And I went all-out and even had the Alotta Collata (huge Pina Colada). I fortunately didn't gain any weight prior to surgery. But then again, I didn't lose any either! I don't feel deprived now at all. My actual last meal was pure fat and grease: KFC! I had their honey cajun wings, mac n cheese, biscuits, cole slaw, and extra crunchy breast. Pepsi and Krispy Kreme for dessert. What a Gordo! :)

For my "official" last meal, my husband took me to Texas Roadhouse. I ordered the 6 oz sirlion steak, mashed potatoes, rolls, and a margarita to top it all off! Turns out the steak was burnt so I was a little disappointed about my last dinner and should have sent it back. But, I am two months out and have had steak chopped up really well and it's been fine for me. So, I don't have to miss out on the things I once loved. But, now life as a post-op has changed my eating drastically. I get nauseous when someone mentions McD's, before I would eat it 3-4 times a week. You won't miss out on anything and you definitely won't miss the pounds :-)

I did some last suppering 3-4 weeks before surgery and gained 10 lbs. But the two weeks before surgery I had to eat protein and veggies only to shrink my liver. Thankgoodness as I lost 21 lbs. So I got rid of the 10 last supper lbs and another 11, which was great. My very last meal was steak with sauteed mushrooms and onions and squash. No potatoes etc. as I could not have them. It was a very tasty meal and something I will have again some day when I'm brave enough to try steak. I do fine with ground round or similar meats but have not tried steak. I'm just 2 months out. <p>For me it wasn't so much a last meal I just made sure I ate all my favorites, especially the sugar things as those I knew would be a long way off and hopefully gone forever. I think I had onion rings for at least 1 meal a day. LOL At least that's what it seemed like. I had one piece of shredded onion ring the other night and it was pretty greasy so I doubt I'll be eating them too much in the future, which is fine because they are far from healthy.

My last meal will actually be two months before surgery I will be eating it tomorrow night. I am going to get fajitas and salad from my favorite resteraunt tomorrow and start my liquid diet Tuesday. My surgeon wants you on a liquid protein diet like the one he has you on after surgery from the time of your first consult till surgery, then two days of clear liquids before surgery. I am not looking forward to it but I know I can do it because I want this so bad. I just hope that my fajitas tomorrow are exactly right.

I was to check into the hospital on a Wednesday and have surgery early Thrusday AM. On the Monday before, a bunch of us went out to all you can eat baby back ribs! YUMMMMMM... When wednesday came around, I had to go to Dr. office first for some tests and then go check into the hospital. I was not to eat anything tuesday night after midnight. So after all the tests on Wednesday, they told me to go have lunch and then check into hospital. I was so nervous, we just stopped at McDonalds.... What a bad last meal! LOL

I ate till I was sick of eating:( The morning I was to begin my 2 day bowell prep I ate my last gooey chocolate chip cookie, I figured with the fleet phospho it wouldnt last long. I cried thinking I could never eat so and so again. A couple mnths later I tasted the same cookie. I will be two years out in july and eat anything in moderation. Trynot to worry its not the end of eating but the beginning of a wonderful adventure!

Why have a last meal? In time you will enjoy everything you now like, except in moderation. I can truly say I now enjoy eating.

Oh my...let's see... I've had my date for so long that I, like others, have been last suppering it up for a while. But, there were very few that I actually thought 'I want to do that again before surgery'. The other times were thinking it may be my last time when I got there. I am still 16 days away from surgery and to tell you the truth, the conversation of food nauseates me many times. The only two things I really want before surgery is chilaquiles(sp)(a mexican dish for breakfast...fried tortilla chips, scrambled eggs, onions, tomatoe sauce, jalapenos) which I'm having over the weekend, and Olive Garden's shrimp primavera. I know I can have both after surgery if I don't eat the accompanying carbs...but I want one last time to eat it all. good luck!

Living in the French Quarter of New Orleans, I had many choices for my "last meal". I chose a jalapeno cheeseburger and pasta salad from a little diner down the street. Delish. My last meal was actually 2 weeks before my surgery, we are put on a low calorie liquid diet prior.

I atre trill I was sick of food. Thee morning of my first of 2 day bowell prep I ate one last gooey chocolate chip cookie and cried. With fleet phospho soda it didnt remain very long:) I can eat like other thin folks do. The original poster said never eat a full meal. Well they are full meals for ME. A pizza hut personal pan IS WAY BETTER THAN 1/2 OF A LARGE PIE!! Near 2 years out and happy!
