Question:
I'm 4 mos. post op and my cholesterol level has gone up 80 points! Anyone do this?
My pcp wants me to go on meds to lower my level. Why would this increase happen now that I'm eating healthier and exercising lots? Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions? — Nancy W. (posted on March 25, 2003)

I would ask for a second test. Sure sounds like a mistake.

I recently had a goofy cholesterol test -- caused by eating something the
morning of the test. When I had it redone it was 75 points lower. I agree
with Bob; take the test again.

Prior to surgery I was on Lipitor. My surgeon said that I wouldn't need
those anymore to stop. My PCP said that was fine. Well my surgery was 3
months ago and I recently went for my yearly physical and my points had
gone up 50 points and I was fasting that morning! My PCP ian't sure what
is going on so I am back on lipitor for 2 months and will be rechecked
again. I just knew that my points would have been very low since I had
lost 45 lbs. Pretty strange! So you are not alone!

Exercise will raise good cholestrol. Try lots of exercise. Still believe
its a flakey test.

I have heard that a serum cholesterol test is an indication of what you've
eaten for the previous 2 weeks before the test. So, if your cholesterol
results were elevated, think back to determine if your diet within the last
few weeks may have contributed and if so, retake it when you've had time to
clean it all out of your system. Take care.<br>
