Question:
I'm ten days post-op and I was wondering what foods would be best for me to eat?
Just wanted to know so I can buy what was best for me to eat. — Diana W. (posted on February 21, 2003)

Eat soft, don't rush the solids. In the long run you will be glad. Sugar
free puddings are good and you can add powdered protein, cream of wheat,
scrambled eggs, mashed potatos, most puree'd foods. Milk shakes made with
protein mix and blended with lots of crushed ice can be flavored with sugar
free jello and taste yummy. Creamed soups are also very good.

10 days post op I was only allowed to be on full liquids. I was allowed
stuff like sugar free Carnation instant breakfast, milk ( up to 1%), soups
that were blended and strained ( I was told to avoid tomato soup because of
the sugar content, BUMMER!). My juices had to be 100% juice and they had
to be diluted. I could also have yogurt but it had to be the fat free
yogurt with no fruit pieces. Dannon has a brand called Light and Fit
creamy that's pretty good. Good luck!

I was on pureed foods for the first month. Here are some of the things I
ate: pureed turkey breast thinned with (home-made) gravy, pureed chicken,
thinned with cream of chicken soup, instant plain oatmeal made with Lactose
free milk, Light and Fit yogurt by Dannon, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes,
pureed vegetables, V8 juice, unsweetened applesauce, pureed peaches, Choice
DM, Lactose free milk, and 100% juices diluted with water. Hope this helps!

Diana~ Congratulations on your surgery! I'm 6 weeks post-op myself and
certainly experimenting with what I can and cannot tolerate. For me, that
second and third week were wonderful in that I was able to move beyond the
clear broth & jello, which I had gotten so tired of. By about the 14th
day, I had moved onto Mashed Potatoes, Soft poached eggs with a melba toast
cracker crumbled on top for texture, wheat thins & ritz crackers, cream
style soups (cream of chix, mushroom, asparagus, etc.), soft cheeses,
cottage cheese, fat free cream cheese, sugar free popsicles (great for
staying hydrated!) and protein shakes, protein shakes, protein shakes!
I've tried to be very aware of my nutritional intake, being careful to
shoot for protein in everything & remembering that Centrum Chewable
every morning! Hot Tea has become my beverage of choice, using the decaf
types (except for my first-of-the-morning cup ~ gotta have a wee bit of
caffeine!). I'm drinking water or hot tea almost constantly to avoid
dehydration. The Hot Tea feels really good on the tummy too. Keep us
informed of your progress!! Isn't this exciting?!?!?!!!

If you are allowed to eat pureed foods, try chili and corned beef. I eat
chili without beans, with a little bit of cheese melted on top. It has
been my mainstay for the last 5-1/2 weeks!
Other good foods are tuna, ground and mixed with a tiny bit of mayo, plain
oatmeal with a pat of trans-free butter. I've also eaten corned beef (well
cooked, and then patted w/paper towels to get rid of some of the fat) and
refried beans. Then, there always is Cottage cheese, the old stand by. I
haven't been able to eat eggs, but many patients can--- either scrambled or
deviled.
Good luck! Beth (1/15/03, open RNY, started 222 down 21 pounds)
