Question:
Will I ever be able to eat a type of hamburger or a type of pizza again?
I wanted to know what type to eat or how to make one that is safe for me to eat. — Diana W. (posted on February 21, 2003)

You didn't say how far you are out. I was able to eat a Krystl Cheesburger
at about 2 months post op. Chewed up very carefully and eaten slowly. I
still don't tolerate the Pizza as the Mozzarella cheese tastes and feels
like gum erasers now. Mozzarella does not set well since surgery.

Diana, hello to you. I eat the veggie burgers named Boca. They are
delicious. I also make burgers with ground turkey or ground chicken meat.
I tried and ate a half slice of pizza but threw it up because the bread
killed me. Good luck to you.

At one year post-op, I can eat about 1/2 of a standard triangular size
slice of pizza (but not the bready end of the crust). I've eaten about 1/2
of a regular hamburger, with the top bun totally removed. However, I've
found that I don't like hamburgers anymore. Haven't craved one in over 6+
months.

hi there, im 1 yr 2 weeks post op. i dont do pizza very much at all, but if
i do, ill eat the toppings of a square peice. ill maybe eat 1 very small
square with the crust only if its very very thin, but usually only the
toppings as ive eliminated alot of carbs and bread out of my diet quite a
while ago. the burger sits fine with me, but i dont do the bun at all. only
the meat and cheese, if its a big burger ill eat half, if its real small
and thin, i can eat 1 patty. good luck to you :)

I didn't WANT those things for about 2 yrs. They were so very unappealing.
Then, they tasted ok, but never nummy. Until my revision. ??? No reason
for it, but now I eat those things frequently. Small portions, of course,
but no ramifications

Diana, I am 6 mos post-op and hamburgers are my favorite meal pre-post,
The only difference is I now eat them w/ou the bread/roll! I have been
eating cheeseburgers (sans the bun) since I was 2 mos post-op! I eat 2-3
burgers a week. I eat the 93% lean kind with cheese and its like
260calories and 29g of protein. I can eat the whole things. PIZZA, I eat
1 slice once a month! heather (OPEN RNY 8/15 - 305/210/150)

I have not eaten a hamburger in 20 months post-op, although I do eat things
with hamburger meat in them. I have just wanted to "not eat a
burger" or hotdogs. Now I am not one of those who totally gave up
sugar as I can eat some sweet things. Everyone is so different! I do eat
pizza now and at times can eat two small pieces of thin crust cheese pizza.
As time goes on you begin to eat more normally, just still such smaller
portions.

I had a slice of pizza (very small piece) at about 4 weeks post op. It was
thin crust and not very doughy. It sat well with me. I had a more doughy
one the other day and took one bite and wanted to gag. I have made chicken
and turkey burgers (no bun) at home and cooked on the Forman. Tastes good
to me!

I am a bit over 3 months out and I eat the cheese off pizza hut thin crust
pizza, toss some canadian bacon on for lean protein and I have no problems.
I take one slice and eat just the toppings with no problems. GOod Luck,

I'll be 8 months out at the end of next week.. and I've eaten some pizza.
I've been very carful about what kind, and its always thin crust... I have
never been able to eat more than one small slice at a time and I don't eat
the edge crust (never did pre op either) ... I don't eat it often.. just a
few times and I think it was after 5 months or so.

I
have not eaten a hamburger. I don't think I've eaten anything with beef in
it. I bought some buffalo burgers the other day to eat, but I haven't had
one yet. I am fairly certain that I wouldn't be able to eat it with a
bun. The idea of biting into one is sort of daunting. You will be able to
eat many things further out.. I don't really have trouble with anything --
occasionally -- I just need to only have a little bit. Good luck!

I would looove to dig into a double cheeseburger with the works from Steak
& Shake or even DQ - but I can't! I can tolerate sweets..I guess it's
a good thing that I cannot tolerate beef so much. Pizza (thin crust) is
fine - usually with bacon, pepperoni and sausage. Even the crust (the best
part!) is okay and hasn't been a problem at all. You'll just find that you
can't eat 1/2 of a pizza any longer! I'm 3 1/2 months post op (open RNY)
and down 75. Congrats on your surgery! A double cheeseburger really is
nothing compared to dropping 75 lbs!! Most of the time anyhow ;). Good
luck to you.

Tombstone makes an excellent lowfat Pizza. Its the veggie one. I always
add canadian bacon to it and sometimes a bit of extra cheese. I cant eat
but 2 small slices but it is a wonderful special treat for me. I get lots
of protein. way less fat than regular pizza and it tastes soooogood. About
the hamburger. I have found that I can eat one...without any bun or bread,
but I have to get ground chuck or sirloin. The plain stuff makes me sick.
I usually make a small pattie.about the same size as for my 2 yr old and
then add cheese, dill pickle and ketchup and mustard. I usually will have
some lettuce or occasionally 2 oven baked french fries...all I want is just
a taste. If you cant tolerate these things now, wait a month and try them
again. Eventually you will probably be able to. I wouldnt eat the pizza
real often though....it still has a decent amount of fat in it(just less
than the full fat varieties)..I usually have it once or 2x a month at most.

Honestly I can't finish a full slice of pizza even after 7 months.
However, the other night I had a hankering for a real cheeseburger when we
went to Ruby Tuesday's...so I ordered one as a treat...well, I cut it into
fours and ate 1 tiny quarter piece and felt incredibly heavy and tummy felt
funky...I guess my body is telling me I can't do it...I tend to do better
with just a plain piece of hamburger meat grilled at home, it's boring, but
I guess I just can't handle the entire combo of meat, vegies, cheese and
bun...bread doesn't do too good in me, so I try to limit that to very
rarely...
