Question:
Increase in Menopausal Sx After Surgery? Medications?
I noticed a big increase in menopausal symptoms after surgery. I spoke to my surgeon today and he thinks it is probably coincidental (I'm 46) and to speak to my PCP about hormone replacement. I can't take Premarin and Provera but last year tried Estratest and Promethium and had good results with them. They were prescribed to regulate sleeping because I'm only perimenopausal and had not been having hot flashes. I went off them in August and kept good sleeping patterns and there was no more symptoms. Then I had surgery on January 7th and all hormonal hell broke loose. I have been having hot flashes several times a day and my sleeping problems are creeping back. Did anyone else experience this? If you are peri or menopausal what hormones or treatments do you take? I'm going to see my dr. in 2 weeks. Thanks. — susanje (posted on February 7, 2003)

Well, I only had surgery on January 13th and haven't had any menopausal
symptoms since then, however, I had a total hysterectomy 9 years ago and
remember the hot flashes, mood swings, etc very well. I was put on
Premarin at the time of my hysterectomy and took it faithfully everyday.
I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism 2 years ago and was immediately
taken off the Premarin. I am not allowed back on it because I was told
the Premarin was probably partly the cause of the clot. Hormone
replacement therapy has alot of dangerous side effects, so please be very
careful.
