Question:
I'm trying to find protein drinks that I can tolerate now that are low sugar.

Any suggestions? Also is it ok to add vanilla extract or other flavors to these drinks? Thanks, jan    — Jan H. (posted on December 11, 2002)

Hi, I had the same problem as you. I had surgery three weeks ago. When I went home I had bought the power to mix at home. Well it was discusting and I could not do it. So I went to GNC and found Ultra Pure Protein Shake. it has 35g of protein and 2g of carbs, and 1g of sugar. I love them. However, the best flavors can be found in the vitamin shoppe. I just love the coffee flovor.

Yes, adding flavors to your shakes is ok. Just be sure of the sugar content.

hi -- www.vitalady.com has a ton of protein drinks, and the Vitalady, Michelle Curran (who is a member of this site) sells samples. All of her protein drinks are low sugar. I have tried a ton and I've found that I like the ProBlend 55 in Swiss Chocolate the best. Good luck!

Jan, I would also recommend checking out the vitalady.com website for protein drinks. She sells sample sizes of many brands of protein shakes, so you can experiment and find what you like -- and typically her stuff is low sugar and low carb, too. I like Proscore 100 Chocolate, which I found out about from that website after trying many samples. She also sells sugar-free flavored syrups (Davinci is the brand name, I think -- available in other places as well) that you can add to shakes to make them more interesting. Good luck!

Oh yeah, one more thing: You can also try adding small amounts of sugar-free, fat-free jello and pudding powder flavors to your protein shakes.

Real Meals only has 1 gram of sugar, and only 4 grams of carbs so it wont cause dumping. It has 60 grams of protein (split into two mini shakes per day because we can only absorb 30 grams at a time) It also has over forty other vitamins and nutrients. Including vitamin b12, calcium and iron. I have never needed other supplements of the b12 or calcium while taking this. It has lean mass stimulators to prevent sagging skin and a special combination of biotin and nutrients to prevent hair loss. Also, remember that all protein drinks will not be absorbed the same by post ops. You body cannot just absorb protein it needs to create peptides to break it down prior to absorbtion. With our new digestive system there isn't enough time to completely break it down so we malabsorb a portion of it. How much depends on how much you had bypassed, The same goes for protein that we get from regular food. Real Meals has the 100% whey protein and the whey peptides already in it. This causes it to be almost 100% absorbed immediately. The combination of protein and lean mass stimulators will also prevent plateaus by preventing you body from going into a starvation mode. When your body goes into a starvation mode it lowers you metabolic rate, which means your body will burn fat slower. The extra protein and lean mass stimulators actually increases your metabolic rate instead causing you to burn faster and yet still retain all of your underlying muscle tone. That is why you hear so many people say once they start Real Meals their weight loss picks up again. I have had people tell me they mix it with strawberries, bananas, sugar free Tang, sugar free Nesquick, peanut butter and sugar free Nesquick, peppermint patties, mangos, etc. Me I like the just plain chocolate how it is. There are banners floating around this site that link directly into a website they have created specifically for post ops. Or you can go to www.protein-solution.com They have people on staff that can answer gastric bypass specific questions by phone or email. I started taking Real Meals at about 4 weeks post op and it has worked great for me. I hit goal within 5 months. I have gone from a size 24 to a 4 or 6. I have no sagging skin and have had no hair loss. Check my profile for more.

Hi there. I use Designer Whey (plain or French Vanilla). They have less than 1 gram of sugar per scoop and 17.5 grams of protein. I use eight ounces of liquid (water/milk) 1.5 tablespoons of Davinci sugar-free syrup (no cal, no sugar, no carbs) to flavor it. It's the only protein I have been able to tolerate to date. One shake lasts me all morning. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected]. Best of luck to you!

I use Carb Solutions. I get it at Walmart, It's under $10. I like the chocolate best, but it comes in vanilla too.It has 19g protien 0 sugar and 120 calories. I increase both the protein and the calories by mixing it with skim milk. I also use decaf instant coffe and some artificial swtnr, blend it until foamy, and have a great tasting brkfst drink.

Try Glucerna. It has lower sugar than Boost or Ensure and I think it tastes better too. I liked the strawberry best.
