Question:
How does our body know when to stop losing weight?

Hi, I am 7 months post op of open RNY and down 110 lbs. All I have heard from family and friends is "when are you going to stop losing weight?". My answer is "I don't know". I know I am losing fast, I feel great, my energy is off the charts, I know I don't eat much, well some days I can eat some I can't eat much at all. I am losing maybe 2-3 lbs a week. So when will my bosy know when to stop and has anyone ever NOT stopped to the point where it got serious? I want to lose another 50lbs and I'll be happy. Am I going to fast? Can ya'll help me out? Thanks and happy holiday to the best support group in the world, All of you!    — Gina D. (posted on December 10, 2002)

I see our starting BMI's are about the same. I'm 19 months post op and lost fast up until month 6. After that it has crept off, slowly. I'm 30 pounds from goal and seriously wonder if I'll ever get there. I suspect you will start slowing down before long. Some people are lucky and get underweight and wonder how they'll gain some. Most of us won't have that problem. Most of the time it seems the body starts slowing down the loss and will settle on the weight IT wants. At least this is my understanding. Don't worry about losing to much. More than likely that won't be ether of our problems. Enjoy the WLS ride. Is'nt it funny how people keep telling us to "stop losing". lol I get a kick out of it. I still have a heck of alot of fat on me, and people sometimes think I should stop losing now.

Your body will stop on its own, and for some evil reason, its always at least 10 pounds from where you want it to stop. If you have been watching these questions for long....think about it. How many have you seen that say....OMG I have lost too much...compared to those that say....I have 10 more pounds to lose, help.

You should start to notice a slow down in the monthly loss pretty soon. Add to that those pesky plateaus which can last a month or longer. The loss starts to taper off but continues for months as long as you continue to work the tool properly-water, protein, lo carbs, vitamins etc. A few do find they are losing too much and can reverse the loss by not following the pouch rules and doing the opposite-snacking more, loading up on carbs...but as a previous poster said, for most of us, it seems to stop just shy of where you want to be!
