My surgeon did not require any special liquid diets or light eating, nor any suppositories or bowel preps. Some people prefer to do a suppository at home on their own, but I didn't do anything except not eat/drink after midnight the night before surgery and I was fine. Hugs, Kim S. Open RNY Nov. 4/02, (-35 lbs.)

Your surgeon should be giving you instructions on what you need to do just before surgery. I was on liquids the day before surgery, then fasting from midnight that night on. Also had to drink a horrible concoction to "clean" me out (boy, did it ever!) and shower with a special cleanser the night before and morning of the surgery.

I would personally do everything to clean myself out before a major operation. I have had a number of abdominal operations and between the doctors messing with your digestive track and also the anesthesia, you colon will shut down for a period of time. If it is empty, it is less likely to become constipated or empacted. In either case, it HURTS to strain with abdominal surgery. So....I would clean even it the doctors told me not to worry about it. Good Luck!

Every doctor is different. I haf a prime rib dinner the night before my surgery. I just couldn't eat after midnight. Check with your doctor.

As most posters have said, you should follow your surgeon's program. Our surgeons require a day of liquids only and a bowel prep. This is because they are making a surgical alteration to your intestines and it is much safer and easier to work on an "empty" intestine rather than one than has bits of food remaining in it. Again though, follow your surgeons instructions. Merry Christmas!

My doctor suggested eating a light meal the night before surgery and nothing to eat or drink after midnight. I had no problems and certainly didn't want to deal with just liquids knowing that's what I'd be having for the first few days after surgery! However, some doctors may have different ideas.

My doctor did not require any pre-op diets or "clean-outs". And I've done great! -103 pounds at 10 months out.
