Question:
Need info on correct stoma size, how to find mine

I had open RNY on 7/19/02, and as of today, have only lost 53 pounds. I don't graze or drink empty calories. I eat only until I feel some sensation of not being hungry anymore, but I'm usually hungry again within an hour. Please give me any advice on this subject. I've worried over it for the last month, but didn't post because I didn't want to be slammed by the soap-box crowd about "eat right". Thanks!!! chris    — Chris S. (posted on December 3, 2002)

Hi! I came across an AMOS profile for somebody who is investigating whether her stoma is too large, and whether her surgery might be failing (or under-performing) as a result. I don't know if she'll see your post, but I recommend you check out her profile or maybe write to her. Her profile is at http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/profile.phtml?N=K994281282 I hope your stoma is okay and that your surgery will work for you, though!

Hi Chris: First of all, NO ONE on this site should worry about posting an honest question. As much as I love this site and visit every day, I find some who have lost all of their weight without problems, seem to sit in judgement of those who are struggling. That is just plain mean and wrong. We have all struggled with this disease, and cannot be condescending when it comes to a fellow WLS brother or sister. Anyway, there is woman on this site, I think her name is Cyndie King. She had experienced slow weight loss and hunger from the beginning. Of course, she was initially told it was all in her head, just be patient, etc. It turns out she had what is called large stoma syndrome, which after life-threatening complications is your worst nightmare. I hope you don't have this, you may just be an extremely slow loser. Please go to her profile and see if you share the same symptoms. If so, maybe you can email her. If you have this, there is also a support group on Yahoo I think. Once again, her name is CYNDIE KING. I think the first name is spelled right. Good luck. Please feel free to email me privately if you would like to talk. Love Grace

You know, after reading your profile and your experiences with your surgeon, I think I'd seek a second opinion. It may be a waste of time, but hey, it's better than wondering forever, isn't it? IF your stoma is fine (and I truly hope it is), I would suggest eating foods that are very dense - if you're not already - and eating to a point of more than just not being hungry anymore, but of actually feeling FULL. this might help extend your time out. It could be that you're not consuming enough at a sitting. Just a thought - and as we all know, I don't know much :>)
