Question:
How do you come up with goal weight?

Is it a number we decide? Our durgeon? A chart somewhere? I know what the insurance comapny charts say and what I think I should weigh are about 25 to 40 pounds different. So when my PS talks about "goal weight" before doing a TT, what number should I be looking at?    — crishsapig (posted on November 26, 2002)

I asked my surgeon what a good weight would be for me. He gave me what I thought was a reasonable and realistic goal that is probably 15 pounds over what the typical height and weight chart shows. I wish you well. - Mike

I chose a goal size rather than a goal weight. When I reached 135 I was in a size 8 and that was good enough for me (even though I really wanted to be a size 6 because I've never been that small before except in utero). Once I reached 135 my body got happy and it became the old "dieting routine" to try to lose more weight and I didn't want to be on the eternal diet any more. When I weighed 125 in high school I wore a 10 or 12 so weights for us after being MO aren't the same as they were when we weren't. If you've just got to have a weight I'd use the BMI chart and find out what the weight would be for a person your height with a BMI of 25. The insurance charts are entirely too conservative in my opinion. They say I still need to lose 30 pounds. If I did that I'd wear a size 2 or something and I don't want to be that small! Best wishes to you!

Goal weight should be wherever you are healthy and comfortable. Picking a magic number is often setting yourself up for disappointment as it is sometimes either unreasonable or simply unattainable. Just be realistic.

I don't have a goal weight...just a goal. I want to buy a pair of pants at Wal-Mart, anything after that is gravy...

I chose around the MIDDLE range of the NORMAL BMI. I believe for my height that is around 124. I chose 129. (I weighed 123 throughout high school). If by any chance I can wear a size 28 or 30 jeans before goal, I will assume I've reached goal as SIZE not weight is what is most important to me. Heck back when I was around 147 I was wearing jean that (I think) were 42. Now I'm wearing a loose 34 and I'm 161. So I'll be happy if I make my size goal. Seems a size is more realistic than weight anyway as we look less than we weigh after WLS. ;)
