Question:
Explain this one??????????

Explain this : I can eat a small piece of choclate candy bar (holloween size) and have NO problem but I can't eat a bite or two of pancake or biscuit (plain, no syrup) without feeling really sick?? Why is that?    — sandy W. (posted on October 26, 2002)

Just as candy and other foods, made of sugars, cause dumping; breads also contain a different form of sugar, causing dumping. Lactose in milk is the same type of thing...it is just a different form of sugar that may cause dumping. I hope this is helpful.

Could it be the fat in the fried pancake that is causing you to dump, rather than necessarily the sugar? I found this to be a problem for me early post-op but now I can eat most things fine.

I have the exact same problem. Very irritating!

I agree with the previous reply re: different types of sugar. I know as a diabetic (former, it went away after sugery...immediately!) I could handle refined sugar (a little) but I had a VERY hard time with bread and pasta and potatoes. Your body simply processes the "type" of sugar differently. FYI - I also had issues with peas and corn. Watch out for those too. They both turn into "sugar" as soon as they hit your body.

Perhaps it is'nt the sugar in the pancake but the fact that it has flour??? What I'm getting at is it was around 9 months before I could eat a slice of bread without being in pain. The bread would tie my stomach in knots. And it still does sometimes. So indeed it could be the sugar part of it, but then the bread part of the pancake could cause pain too. Just a thought. Personally I think pancakes are to HEAVY AND FILLING for a new post op and alos it is taking room from PROTEIN you should be eating. (I'm not sure how far along you are at this point).

I highly doubt that you are dumping on the pancakes/biscuits. I am just like you and my surgeon told me that bread of any kind (aside from toast) is not usually well tolerated. It tends to ball up in the pouch and sit there for hours and hours blocking up the opening. Not to mention that when bread gets wet, it tends to expand, which will also cause pain. I simply avoid bread of any kind. It was easier than I thought it would be to eliminate it from my diet. If you have a carb craving, try toasting it or even just eat some low-fat Wheat Thins. Good luck.

The pancake and biscuit are breads, which some have a hard time tolerating. Like the posters stated below, they are probably getting stuck and making you feel really sick. Dumping, however, is what occurs when you eat too much sugar. The amount varies with each individual. And you are probably able to tolerate small amounts and that is the reason the candy bar gave you no problems. Stay away from doughey bread products for another month and then try them again to see how it goes. Try at intervals until you are able to tolerate. Some can never tolerate breads again. You'll figure it all out.
