Question:
I am 2 wks post-op and have lost only 8 pounds. Is something wrong?

It seems as though every post-op I've talked with, or read about lost a large amount of weight right from the beginning. I have been on a clear liquid diet as per my surgeon's orders and I feel as though I should have lost a lot more. I'm really worried about it.    — Lisa E. (posted on October 22, 2002)

I am the same way! I've been getting discouraged about it until my husband pointed out that it is 4 lbs. a week - and the slower we lose it the less skin we have to worry about. Could it be because our BMI isn't as high? I'm glad I'm not the only one.

You know, I started off feeling the same way. I weighed myself at two weeks post-op and had "only" lost 11 pounds. I was heartbroken, and started thinking I would never make it to goal if this was the best my body would allow me to do. BUT...I am now just shy of 7 months post-op and I have lost 109 pounds, with only 21 to go until my goal of 147 (I started at 277)! DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED! Your body is still healing and not everyone loses at the same rate. I only lost 11 pounds in the first two weeks, but after that, it started practically "melting" off....hang in there! Lisa

I know how you must feel - but it is still more weight loss then what you would be losing without this tool. I read your journal and I'd look at the number of calories and sugar in the protien drinks that you have been using. 4 a day seems like a lot for 2 weeks post op. Perhaps, it is a bit high in calories. I would suggest drinking more water and start walking. Good luck! 3 months post - down 80lbs.

Hi Lisa: I know how discouraging this is. After all you have undergone, you really expect something more from WLS. It does not help to tell you that this is more than you would have lost on a diet. Of course it should be! Your body was reconfigured along with the malabsorption component. You are certainly entitled to expect great things. I am in the same boat as you, and losing extremely slowly. One tip that I was given, was to take my measurements. Please try that. You will be pleasantly surprised at how many inches you are losing. I cannot understand how you can lose all these inches and not lose weight, but it does happen. Hang in there, even though it is damn tough. The end result is what matters. You will probably lose a significant amount. It will just take longer than many others. Good luck. I certainly understand what you are going through. Fell free to email me privately if you want to talk. Love Grace
