Question:
I am 5months post op gastroplasty and lost only 40lbs
I am begining to think that the surgery didn't work for me, only 40lbs in 5 months not a very big weight loss at all. Has any one else experienced this small amoutn of weight loss after surgery? — Donna D. (posted on October 16, 2002)

I am 4 1/2 months post op and have only lost 54 lbs. I was really getting
concerned but i have lost 4 inches in my bust, 9 inches in my waist and 6
inches in my hips and 4 inches in my thighs. I really think you should
look at your inches lost if you have kept record. Maybe you wont be so
discouraged. I noticed others who lost a lot more in that amount of time,
were a lot heavier when they started out than I was, so maybe that had
something to do with it... Hang in there girl. Hey 40 lbs is 40 less than
you weighed 5 months ago.... May God Bless and keep you . Rita

I had a vbg on 8-26-02 and as of yesterday have only lost 37 pounds. I was
worried as well since I see people in here that have lost that or more the
first couple of weeks. This is the advice my surgeon gave me. First -
Everyone looses at different rates. Don't get discouraged and don't try to
compare yourself to others. You will hit plateus at different times and
for different lengths of time. Just make sure you are doing what you are
supposed to. Second - make sure you are getting in all your water, eating
balanced meals (well, as balanced as we can get on only a few ounces and
mostly protein) and excersise!! Excersise is the most important. Since I
can't afford to join a gym, I was told to walk around the block for at
least 1 mile everyday until I get to the point that it is a habit and is
too easy, then walk for longer or try a different excersise. That's it.
This surgery is a tool and we must learn to use it, not just let it sit
there and do all the work itself. When was the last time you saw a hammer
jump up off the table and bang a nail into a wall by itself? Most
importantly, remember you are doing great. When was the last time you
could lose 40 pounds in 5 months?

I am almost at 5 months and stuck on 48 lbs. Sometimes I feel I will be
the only person to fail after this surgery. My doctor assured me this was
common since we have always failed at dieting in the past. I am
reevaluating my dieting habits which are not perfect and changing my
exercise. Some of us are just slow. God grant me patience and I want it
now!!!

I'm almost 8 months post op and I haven't lost much more than you. I don't
know what the answer is, but I know I'm not joining a gym. This has been
so depressing, I also think I'm one of the few failures in this surgery.
