Question:
Can someone recommend a WLS-friendly internist in Asheville? I have just moved here,
Also, are there any local support groups in the Asheville, N.C. area? — Melissa D. (posted on October 8, 2002)

Hi, I am in Franklin, NC and I am using Dr. Champion in Atlanta, GA...its a
few hours away, but he is worth it. He is one of the best surgeons in the
world for this surgery. You can check out his website at
www.drchampion.com. Also, there is no one close to us who does the RNY
laproscopically...the closest one in NC is Chapel Hill and Duke...so,
Atlanta is closer. Good Luck!

Hi Melissa...I live just outside Asheville, and there are now five of us in
my family who have had lap RNY with Dr. J.K. Champion of Atlanta. He is
one of the pioneers in laparascopic bariatric surgery and internationally
renowned for his experience and expertise. He has a satellite support
group which meets monthly in Asheville for his patients in the western NC
and upper SC areas. I would be happy to give you the names of some local
physicians who are supportive of WLS. Please feel free to email me
privately at [email protected]. Best wishes and welcome to the beautiful
Great Smoky Mountains!

I know it's a little bit of a drive, but there is a wonderful support group
in Hickory. We meet the third Thursday of each month at 7 pm, and if you
are interested, please email me at [email protected] and i would be happy to
give you more information.
