Question:
Liquid diet stage-Is it ok to constantly be sipping on liquids?
Have to wait until Tues to contact nutritionist. So I need some clarification. Going into 2nd week of liquids. I measure off 1 oz of cream soup/broth for each "meal" & have SF CIB (frozen) in between. Is is ok to constantly be sipping on my clear liquids-water, sf v8 splash, crystal lite, etc? I feel that I can drink about 3-4 oz of these clear liquids at a time. Thx in advance for any responses. — mary V. (posted on September 2, 2002)

So long as they are zero calorie liquids thats fine. Its the only way to
get in the liquids. Consuming any sort of food this way is grazing and
thats bad. Can llead to poor loss and regain...

Absolutely! Drink, drink, drink. It seems you can never get enough the
first three or so months. I drank sips constantely. Even kept water by my
bed and drank EVERY time I woke up (which was alot). I was always so
thirsty no matter how much I drank. I was glad when I could finally GULP
water again. ;)

Yes! At your early stage, it is important to sip liquids all day long in
order to get in all the water you need to. Later on, when you can drink
larger amounts, you don't need to drink all day, and in fact, when you
start solids foods, your advised not drink for a certain amount of time
before and after you eat.

I am going to tell you what I am having to do... I am one week post-op.
Every 2-4 hours, I have to have my "meal". This consists of
either Jell-o, broth, 100% apple or grape or cranberry juice, Boost,
Carnation Instant breakfast, Protien drink, and sugar free popcicles. I
can't have anything for 30 minutes to an hour before or after my meals and
I have water or decaffinated tea between. Those are considered "free
liquids". You need to maek sure you are getting some nutrition whether
it be Boost, Enlive, Ensure, a protien drink, carnation, something. I have
found that if I don't, my energy level is really down. I can only have 2
ounces for my meal and then in between, I have a cup that holds about 32
ounces and I usually make it to drinking about half of it with water or
tea. Good luck and make sure to talk to your nutritionist. Everyone's is
different, but you need to go with what yours says because your situation
may be different. Be careful doing what others say they do. i am just
telling you mainly for you to compare.
